WOW!

WOW is right...make sure you post photo of it potted up. I don't know anything about this plant, it sure has amazing roots. Is that all one plant?

Thanks Andy and Rina. Rina, yes all one plant. This is a Mesemb. family plant. Like the Iceplants at the big box in flats. This one grows like a shrub instead of a ground cover. It has really nice small pink/orange flowers. It grows from cuttings by the way.

That is fantastic! Did you grow this large one from seed or from cuttings?

Tracy, yes it is from a cutting. Rina, you're welcome to some cuttings when I give it a haircut.

I bought a pot yesterday and potted this up today. When I get a day off Wed. I will clean up the roots some. I will also give it a haircut and save the cuttings for those who want. I don't think I'll top dress it yet. Found out I can't get the days off for the show. Bummer.

I don't need to root around for a compliment for that, Bill. Tremendous plant that's dug the raised bed cultivation and now will do quite well in a pot. Sorry about the no-show-go, but hey, it'll save you lots of money, right?

An interesting plant. Can it stay potted up that way with 1/2 its roots exposed? When does it flower?......Maryl

Fantastic, a true work of art. Too bad you have to miss the show, this would have brought a winner for sure. I'm also curious about how this plant will do with the roots exposed? Do they adjust to being exposed to air and sort of harden up?

Maryl and Tracy,

This is one of the few Mesembs which don't mind their roots exposed. Depending on the amount of water you give them in a potted environment, they'll grow lusciously or less so. Bill had the long-term goal, which in SouCal isn't too long-term, of fattening the roots up in a raised bed first before exposing the roots for the delightful pachycaul effect. I see this plant and I think Bugs Bunny. Then I think of the question I put my wife through each day ('What's up, Doc?'). Anyway, Bill's plant is a prize-winner as it is, but with the gilding-the-lily effect of a nice pot, such as the one currently in use, AND coordinated top dressing, it might very well win Best Plant at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

And it does flower, smallish yellow-gold flowers, IIRC, in the summer.
