Voles: Anyone have experience with VoleBloc/PermaTill?

I have yet to plant my hostas in the ground & I wanted to give them the best chance, so I have been doing some research (on soil, fertilizer, pests, et cetera) I know for sure that I have voles. I read that in order to discourage them, to not use mulch... but to use a sharp edged slate product called VoleBloc or PermaTill. Has anyone used this product? Could I just use regular small landscaping slate chips instead? Their website said to basically surround the roots creating a barrier & use in place of mulch. Would a spinout bag essentially do the same thing? Pots instead? Thanks!
