Using pea gravel as a vole deterrant...

OK kids, I have a heckuva hosta haul (circa 30!)on my front porch that needs desperately to be planted in the ground. It's supposed to be 95 degrees here Saturday, and even hotter next week, and these plants have been sitting here all week, with their roots wet. I wanted to put them all in pots in the ground, but I don't have any help with the hole diggin, so I have to go to Plan B. The ground here is rock hard because we are in EXTREME drought, and the hole for just the plant doesn't need to be as big as the hole for the pots. I have had voles in the past, but haven't seen any this year, and these are going in the woods, so I don't want to take any chances.

My question is how much pea gravel to put in the hole after I dig it, assuming that I don't have a heat stroke in the process. Do I also put it on the sides and top? Or one or the other? I checked the FAQ's and couldn't find the answer so I was hoping to get some help from y'all.

Thanks,

Tanya
