Planning the garage sale -- 2 weeks away!
Comments (2)Mikey, our town doesn't allow sales to start before 7:00 AM so I'm thinking maybe 7:30 would be a good time, or maybe 7:00. I went to several last week in this town and they all started at 8:00, so starting early would get the early birds before they head off to the later ones. Thanks! Comments (37)Everyone is invited to come to my house on June 21 for our 5th anniversary party! Finished the colonoscopy this morning, and then learned that the plumber is still out of town and unavailable, and so we hired a different one, as we do not want to wait another week without a kitchen sink. Enough is enough! It is probably costing us a bit more for the new plumber (the first one never gave us a written quote or contract, but he's two doors down from us), but I feel that he is doing a competent job. After not having a sink for 10 days and then having a colonoscopy, my patience for waiting had run out! I will be very happy to be able to cook again this evening, even though we are having a terrible heat spell. I am not up for shopping, but I don't think we need anything, and I still have all the frozen leftovers that we never ate. Saturday we installed my new bathroom faucet (to go with the new shower controls), and so we had to go to Bouget Brothers in Santa Monica to find a brass coupling (Afterwards we had lunch on Sawtelle at a new Vietnamese restaurant). We first went to B&B Hardware in Mar Vista, but they are going out of business and are not restocking and were out of what we wanted. I am sad to see B&B go - when I lived in Culver City and Venice (from 1989-2009) I went there a lot and seldom bothered to go to Home Depot. Now, we are only a mile from a HD and go there a lot, but they did not have brass couplings, and I would not settle for galvanized steel. Comments (2)I was recently involved in a very lengthy conversation at the hardware store between myself, the proprietor of my local hardware store, the Just-For-Copper sales rep and our local plumbing inspector. The advertising and packaging for the product eludes that it meets or exceeds all applicable standards for both the Plumbing & HVAC industries. On the other hand, I have to agree with the plumbing inspector. That advertising is false and deceptive. The manufacturers claim of suitability is based solely upon testing that was done by or on the behalf of the manufacturer whereas code requires that all products used in the plumbing industry must be certified by a recognized independant third party testing agency. Before this product could be deemed suitable for use on a potable water distribution system it must be tested and labelled as suitable under the ASTM(American Society of Testing & Materials) standard B88 (methods for joining copper pipe) and ASTM/NSF standard 61-(suitable for potable water distribution systems.) Products intended for use in the DWV(Drain,Waste & Vent system) must be approved by the ASSE (American Society of Sanitary Engineers) and products intended to be used for HVAC application must be tested and approved by the ASME(American Society of Mechanical Engineers). After thoroughly reviewing the packaging, advertising and manufacturers specification data sheet we determined that nowhere does it indicate that the product has received any of the above certifications. The Plumbing inspecter than pointed out that even if the product did have the required independant testing agency approval, that in and of itself does not indicate that the product has been adopted for use by the plumbing industry national model plumbing code or the state or local plumbing codes in effect at the intended point of use. Currently the only approved method for joining copper to copper in a concealed location is soldering with lead free solder or brazing. In reference to your original question, i would not do anything until i checked the available play in your present mixer location. In many cases the controls are extended out far enough that you may be able to gain the necessary 7/8" by merely adjusting the length of the trim escutheons....See MoreIs it safe to leave a portable fan running for 8 days while away?
Comments (6)Depends on the fan motor bearings. Some have ball bearings and can operate continuously for weeks at a time. Other, less expensive fans like those in the big box stores have sleeve bearings, usually of bronze, with just an oil film that may not last an entire week of continuous operation. When the oil film dissipates, the bearings can dry out, greatly increasing the friction in the bearings and slowing the motor form the increased drag, forcing the motor to draw more current and work harder to maintain any speed at all. Accumulated dust in the bearings can aggravate that. Eventually the drag from dry bearings becomes so high the motor simply stalls and stops rotating. If that happens with the switch on and continuous power to the motor, the motor can overheat and potentially ignite the power cord, with the flame front traveling along the cord to the wall. You can figure out what happens after that. You don't have to take my word for this. Try contacting your local fire department for their opinion or your homeowners insurance representative. Fans, toasters, coffee pots, etc, left on and unattended are primary sources for house fires. Having survived one house fire and seen the effects of an office fire from a coffee pot left on over night we now do not ever leave any electrical device in a power-on state, other than a low wattage light, or a thermostat set just high enough to prevent freezing, for more than a few hours, for any reason....See MoreVince (8) Kemper
