Do you have any of the same plants you had in the beginning?
Comments (28)Sorta comes down to how long of a "beginning" one is considering, for me. My very first 2 orchids are long gone. One was a NOID den that eventually died, and the other was a NOID phal that I sold or gave away at some point. I do still have 2 divisions of a NOID miniden (which is planted in wet peat in a bog terr) I bought at Lowes yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaars back when the BBS carried them frequently. That purchase was a year or two after that of the phal and den mentioned previously. All predated the first time I attended an OS meeting or even knew of events like orchid shows. :) W/ the exception of the aforementioned miniden, my oldest plants [if I stretch "beginning" to include my first orchid show] would be a Pot Hoku Gem 'Superspots' and Blc Blazing Treat. Both of which I've had for probably ten or more years now....See MoreHave you ever grabbed any roadside plants?
Comments (32)I have rescued many plants over the years and taken cuttings and/or diggings from many more. But I always follow certain guidelines. This is how I determine what I will take and what I won't, for what it's worth: 1. I never take anything from private property without permission. 2. I never, ever take cuttings from public gardens or botanical gardens, as those are display gardens. If everyone took cuttings, there would soon be nothing to display. 3. I am very cautious about taking wildflowers from the wild, as most don't transplant well. And if there is any chance they are endangered or threatened in the wild, I leave them alone so they can grow and reseed where they should be. BUT... 4. Anything in the path of a bulldozer is fair game. Like most of you, if I know an area is being developed, I figure I'm saving the plants that I take from certain death. That's how my mother got the beautiful butterfly orchid that I've had for more than 30 years now. 5. Plants that are obviously not natives but are growing in wild areas are usually just fine to dig and take. They don't belong there, anyway. Exceptions would be areas that have been deliberately seeded with wildflowers, etc. But I have found all sorts of neat things that volunteered in areas where they really didn't belong. 6. I have taken plants from roadside ditches, both native and exotics, for my enclosed ponds. I never dispose of any of them in any way that would release them back into our natural waterways. But I've snatched water hyacinths, water lettuce, pickerel weed, arrowhead, duckweed and more from ditches in the past. This is probably an activity that is punishable by fines, at least, since water hyacinths are such a terrible nuisance in our streams & rivers. But I know that any I take are "out of the system" for good, so I don't feel too bad. (Just be aware that if you are caught taking them, you could be fined, at the very least. The law probably doesn't care HOW responsibly you use them.) 7. And lastly, anything already broken off and laying on a sidewalk, or in an aisle, or on a path is fair game. That's going to be a goner if you DON'T pick it up and pot it, so why not? Just my thoughts. Found plants are a blessing I would hate to be without, but I try to use common sense and be fair to others. Marcia...See MoreBluestar- Ever Had or Have Any Rebates, Incentives, etc?
Comments (5)I think Bluestar is a niche market product, for people who love to cook on a range or cooktop with residential industry leading features. The likes of Wolf, Viking, DCS, Dacor and others are all similar products. In the car market Rolls, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini are all niche market products with no incentives or rebates. Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai are all similar cars with incentives. I am not saying that Bluestar is the Bentley of ranges but i hope i get my point across. Now would they sell more if they had a rebate? possibly but then again people who buy Bluestar buy it for its features and ability to do its job and do it well. It can also be said that a manufacturer or retialer that is offering big incentives is in financial trouble in the economic climate, again I point to the car market. GE currently has big incentive, they were desperate to sell off the money losing appliances business. I would say that Wolf should be offering HUGE incentives been as they have a 28,000 unit recall ongoing or Sub Zero who has the worst in home repair rate in the US for refrigeration, both companies are shedding staff right now or Viking who loses market share every year. some of the above companies are in the niche product market also (to a degree) but IMO its their arrogance that prevents them from offering rebates or incentives. In regards to service, I agree Bluestar did have big service staff problems in the past, but I truly believe that those days are in the past. Matt and John really do have a handle on things. If you are under warranty you will get free service for 2 years. If you are out of warranty they will still help you but you need to pay for service/parts. If you call with a broken ceramic sparker don't expect to get one for free. They are not covered under the warranty, having said that they may send you one for free. If they don't send you one for free they cost less than $20. Now you can moan that you paid $$$$ for the range or you could have them send you one and fix it yourself in less than 5 mins. When you buy a car how much do you spend on annual service, oil, antifreeze, tires, brakes etc to stop it from breaking down? With a range most people do nothing a point in case. If the door seizes its probably because YOU did not read the manual which clearly says they need to be oiled. Again you can moan and post or you could call Bluestar or if its the weekend call your retailer they should be able to help you fix it in less than 10 mins. As we all know I am close to Bluestar, if I read a posting which reads like a poster is not getting good service I call Matt in the service dept, and I have to be honest and say very often there are two sides to a posting/story. Sure a Bluestar can have problems but so can any other range or product. In the end I have NEVER had a customer not get service from Bluestar. Further I have never failed to get an answer to a question in a respectable time frame, maybe not instantly as some customers expect but certainly in a time frame that is reasonable. I have even had customers call me to ask questions about Bluestar Service and on some occasions I have put the customer on hold and called Bluestar for a conference call and jumped Matt or John on the line to show Bluestar can be contacted. In conclusion I have more confidence in Bluestar appliances and there service department to give my customers good products and good after sales service than any other Manufacturer we sell....See MoreHave you ever had an intruder in your home?
Comments (25)Years ago when i lived in NJ,someone came into my apt about 3 in the morning.Just my baby son and i were home.DH was in the Marines and overseas at the time.I was also pregnant about 6 mos. DS and i were both asleep, and i woke up when i heard someone open the door and come down the hall.I was thinking DH came home early, til i heard them flip the light switch in DS's room, and DH knew that i didn't have his light set up to come on with that switch.I jumped up in bed,and as i did so this big man came into the room.I glanced around for something to defend myself ,but there was nothing. So in a very calm voice,i said who are you and what are you doing in here!! He said nothing, just stood there.I said you better get the hell out of here right now,i'm calling the cops.He started walking back down the hall and i then noticed that he hadn't closed the door when he came in,and his keys were still in the lock.As he got towards the door i went to the phone in the kitchen as the hall forked off into a "Y",to the kitchen or the front door He went out the door, and i went out right behind him and started banging on the next door neighbors door. They opened the door and i fell apart. Neighbors DH took off bare feet and all after the guy,but he had dissappeared into the night. They told me they heard me talking and they also thought DH had come home. They called my sister and my BIL came and got me and ds and took us to their home for the rest of the weekend. The next morning my BIL took me to the housing office and reported, they were sooooooooooooooo unconcerned, said,oh it was probably just the old tenent, and he forgot he didn't live there anymore.SO BIL told them to change the locks before i came home and add a chain lock or another kind of lock as well. They had the nerve to tell him they couldn't add a second lock, their policy.BIL told him then he would, because it wasn't against his policy. I was and still am amazed at how calm i stayed while he was in my apt.But it scared the crap out of me. Kathi...See Morejolj
