I am jealous of your oriole! I love them so much. I had several pairs nest every year at my old home but never had one since I moved. Did you have them before you put up the feeders? I've never put up feeders for them, they just showed up. Three years in a row they made nests on the same branch in a tree in my front yard. They found some string from a blue tarp, and they'd use it every year to build their nests, which made the nests very strong and they really stood out. One year we had winds in excess of 80 mph and I was worried sick about those poor little babies. After the storm I was outside with a flashlight, searching the ground for the babies. Darned if the next morning they were all in that tarp built nest, still alive. I was thrilled they survived the storm. The following year one oriole built a nest on a limb that was only five feet off the ground. We joked it had to have been one of those babies from the wind storm that was brain damaged. :) I sure miss those birds since we moved. They seemed like old friends. Thanks for sharing your picture.

Marian - That roadrunner would've been a great thing to get a video of. Happy ending but - I heard a thunk against my window this morning and went outside to find a male Baltimore Oriole sitting on the ground with his head tipped sideways and his beak hanging open. It took him 15 or 20 minutes to recover and he looked like he was getting worse for awhile instead of better. He kept closing his eyes. I couldn't resist letting him sit on my hand for awhile and I fed him some of the nectar from the Oriole feeder. They're so pretty. My kids have made home-made snowflakes and stuck them all over my bay window to keep the birds from flying into it since it's close to my bird feeders. I'm surprised he flew into it but he may have seen his reflection. Yesterday, he was landing on the ledge under the window and pecking against the glass. I wish I had another Oriole feeder. They seem to be territorial. It has four perches but I never seen more than one at a time at it. There were two male Orchard Orioles chattering at each other in the tree for a long time yesterday but neither of them would go to the feeder and the Baltimore Oriole won't go to it if there's already an Orchard Oriole there.

This is only my second year to have Orioles and I've never seen a nest. John - Do you know what kind of trees your neighbor has that they like? Last year, the Orioles stayed around for a little while and then disappeared so they must've nested in someone else's yard - not mine. This year they showed up about a week earlier than last year. I've seen as many as 4 males at a time in our dogwood tree where I've been feeding them. The females aren't around as much and I've only seen two. Ive tried in vain for years to get Baltimore orioles to come to feeders. I've tried various specialty sugar water feeders, put out sliced oranges and grape jelly to no avail. The only thing that touches oranges here are chipmunks and squirrels, just chewing a little. I see plenty of orioles in May when they return, and sporadically the rest of the year. They are going for the mulberries in my yard now. My brother has orioles that come to his hummingbird feeder - he takes the popular perky pet feeder, and removes the bee guards. These are my favorite sugar water feeders. (I put up a couple without realizing the perches are in the bottom of the box, be sure to install those.) Orioles might go for mealworms - those seem to be like filet mignon for birds. Here is a link that might be useful: perky pet feeder
