Speaking of robins....

We have one robin that keeps hitting our windows. It started out at a small window on the north side of the house, DH put one of the grandkids plastic dinosaurs in the window to try to discourage it, didn't work. Then it started on the middle bedroom (computer room) on the east side of the house, pulled shades, that didn't work. Then the robin started attacking our door wall (slider) on the east side of the house! When we hear it we go stand there and it will leave.

Well, I told my next door neighbor (89 years) and she said there was an old wives tale about if a bird is knocking on your window someone is going to die! I told DH.

A few days later when I got up in the morning DH asked how I was feeling, I told him fine.

He was just checking cause the robin was tapping on the window on the south side of the house that morning!!!

Crazy robin!!!!

My mother had a similar saying, but with her, she half believed it was a true omen. It was a legend that came from her pioneer family. Her version was, "If a bird strikes a window, its a warning that a death will soon happen or already has happened." The difference here is that a bird smashes into the window, not one that approaches in a controlled fashion to peck away.

This legend struck fear in the hearts of many mothers during the Civil War where a close family member might have been far away on a battlefield and communications poor or slow. Belief in this omen may have increased during that war because deaths were high from battles, accidents, and diseases and the probability of a family member being affected was high.

Death is knocking at your door, death for the robin.

What it really means is the bird doesn't know another robin from its reflection.

Greetings. Hope all are well and had a fun filled, productive season. We did. Starting to think about which varieties and how many of each for this yr. I love it! A smaller list I think than last yr. 43 plants were too many once buis. forced intense work hrs. since late last summer with no let up expected in the near future and we still haven't found that right new place yet. So, half in containers for mobility, half rotated to a new spot seasoning as we speak. Red Robin and an un-named family heirloom cherry have been giving us a few now and then but they are in my seed starting space ... Thankfully, we got mostly snow rather than ice and no power loss. 7 days is a long time with no juice for the well. Good Luck! Dave (the other one :-)

irina_co(z5 CO) Joanne - what I said - is not to put the club down - but to give a idea for the program. Even a small club has programs - correct? I would agree with Irina ... even a small club can have programs. For that matter, what about trying to get together with other clubs -- including the larger one you mentioned -- to have programs or sales? It could lessen the cost of having programs or putting on a sale as well as give members from other clubs a chance to see what the other clubs are growing. For that matter, would that one hobbyist allow the clubs to sell as well? From what you described, I wouldn't think the clubs' offerings would grossly detract from her sales. And it might provide the clubs with a bit more income. The sad reality - when the club ages, and no new people come - it slowly passes the point of no return - the meetings become a coffee meet for old friends, people talk about grandchildren and colonoscopies, nobody is interested in plants that much - so even if the new person shows up - they do not stay, For a club to survive, new members are critical. If your club has degenerated to the point Irina mentioned, then it may indeed be too late to recover. If not, then it would still require a great deal of effort to resuscitate but may be doable ... IF there are members willing to take action. Which again, to quote Irina, will require at least 2 people passionate about the club who can work as a team. There needs to be programs not only to keep old members interested but to entice new members to come and return. There absolutely must be an up-to-date media presence for that club. It is not just your area which is having difficulty in attracting new members. Does your club have an online presence? Particularly a regularly update Facebook page? The proliferation of online modes of communication has resulted in a generation that by-and-large lacks face to face communication skills. They are much more comfortable texting, tweeting, whatever. Also, sites like YouTube have numerous "how to videos" (not all of them correct) making it possible for folks to see things remotely at their convenience. This is a tough set of hurdles to overcome. Personally, I am not a FB fan ... never have been. But I am fully cognizant of the fact that FB is a mainstay of many people's lives -- particularly the young 'uns. Having an active online presence is the way your club will be "discovered". Regular updates shows that it is active and the types of things one can expect to learn about or participate in and therefore have a reason for attending. Once a new person shows up at the door, then it is vital that the members greet the newcomer and make them feel welcomed or you will never see them again.

Its' most likely a male robin,and he sees what he "thinks" is a threat-another male robin-he obviously is seeing himself,but doesnt realize that-if you watch,you'll notice "his" females' nest is close by.

I've heard this from many years ago, bu it was only if a bird actually got into your house, it was a sign of death. Also I read that a bird flies into the glass window because they think they are seeing another scene of similar trees, grass or whatever. But then how could anyone know what a bird is thinking? Unless he is a bird brain?

Sue - does that include an already dead bird brought into the house by a cat? We did have a couple of blue jays in our house about 5 years ago. They came in through a narrow opening of our dining room sliding glass doors. One was in the sink and the other was in the eating area behind the blinds. I managed to get them out by opening the other sliding glass door really wide and I think they sensed the wind and the outdoors and just followed that sensation. The cats were going ballistic.

I often heard this from different older relatives years ago and it definitely meant live birds. Just another of the old wives tales.
No, I don't think it would include a dead bird; I think the cat was just showing off her, his "catch" and hoping for some praise, and maybe a treat. Smarty Cat, right?
