Entry Console Lamps

I have been looking for months for the right lamps and finally just bought some the other day. I think the shades need to be replaced with a different color, but otherwise are they ok?

I think you have too much stuff on the console but the lamps look okay I do agree that a different color shade might work well, maybe black.

Hi, I love your console table. The lamps are nice but you will spend more trying to find the right lamp shade to fit. I would return them so that you get a set that works without having to change them. How about ceramic gourd shaped lamps? They would be curvy and would look more substantial on a table that length. I would remove all the other accessories - too much going on. I would pick up a large dough bowl or shallow glass bowl (Pier 1 or Home Goods) and fill it with decorative rattan balls or some other material (Target or Home Goods has a good selection) and place it in the center. That would be a classic, clean look. More is less. Then you may want to add 3 or 5 items to the bottom that relate to eachother. Try varying the height and scale. I agree that going without a rug is probably your best move. You can follow your heart for what to put on the wall -- one always should, anyway. If you feel lost, I suggest you look at clean, modern abstracts for a start, in colours you love. I'm not directly recommending this painting, because it's sold, but it's a good page to look at, anyway. I can just imagine something like this above that console. In terms of wider decoration, you could then use the colours in the painting by carrying them through to adjoining rooms. This may be more work than you want. Is the door to the right of the table the entrance? If so, I would put in a larger hanging light. The one you have gets lost. Also, it should be centered on the wall where the console table is, unless it is lining up with a light over your dining table. If it is centered, then you might be able to hang it lower with the open door hitting it. But these are really just minor changes to what is already a lovely room.

Begin by deciding what you want to emphasize as your focal point. To me, the obvious one should be your fireplace so your sofa should face that. Once the sofa is relocated, I would place the dark blue chair on the right side of the room. The patterned chair I'll discuss later. I agree with others about disguising the cabinet openings by painting the back of the opening to match the trim. Your sofa fabric texture appears nubby and the rug is also. For me, the "delicate" print on the black (?) and white chair next to the tall cabinet doesn't work. Either remove it or consider a slip cover in a solid that's dark grey (in the photo the center of your rug appears to be dark brownish-grey) or similar to your sofa. If you do choose a patterned fabric chair or chair cover, it needs to incorporate some of your "earthier" tones (if you plan to keep the rug and sofa) AND a healthy dose of the dark blue on your walls. On the tall cabinet, I would lose the neutral wood tray holding the neutral color candle and find a piece that incorporates some of the stronger colors in the room. To me, the blue you've chosen for the lower portion of the walls is not spread around or incorporated throughout the room enough. Throw pillows that do the same thing are a must to get your sofa to be part of the total package. For the mirror, how big should i go? console is 67” long and current mirror is 34”. I plan to cover the shoe bench in a different fabric once everything else is set. I love the rug because it’s a perfect match to the console color, but i wish it came in round or square because it looks awkward! I’ve turned it the other way but was told it looked better horizontal.

I think the lamps are gorgeous. It looks like a distressed wood console - with that I would keep the shades light to play up the lighter tones in the wood and keep the look a little more airy and light-hearted. I agree, too many accessories on the console. I would move the candlesticks off since they are competing with the lamps.

true true true on getting lamps with shades that start out right. i bought a great lamp with a too-dark shade and i've yet to find the right sized but different color to go. finally i moved the whole thing to a new space where the lack of light from the lamp didnt matter and bought a new lamp for the original space.

I do not think those lamps are right. Your table is distressed and the lamps are glitzy. I would look for tall bronze or black metal or resin lamps that are less bulky. Also, I would put a different mirror above the table, something with a less modern looking frame. Your accessories are too varied in design. You have sleek bowl, chunky candle sticks, and Asian Fu dog. I would add a plant with a pottery type pot. And maybe large bowl, tray or basket to use for Gatling keys and mail. On the bottom self, I would center another large rectangular or round basket to hold gloves, hats, etc. I would ditch the sleek vase in the corner and add an umbrella stand or a chair.
