Tub Deck Surround: Preparing for tile

Often by the time a builder calls you to a job sight critical steps are all ready finished. I found this photo the other day that shows some Hydro ban Liquid waterproofing installed over some 3/4" plywood.

You can see the plumbing fixtures for the tub are installed so we know that the tub is not going to be an undermount style and the tub deck I was told was ready for tile. I however was in charge of the steam shower and could not leave it with plywood alone. So I used up some Hydro Ban over the plywood.

Not perfect - but better than what was there.

If your planing a tub deck why not contact the tile man or gal first and find out what they would like to see. With almost no effort these tub decks can be designed with proper construction, can get some water proofing and be built better.

But what ever you do do not do nothing. This photo does not show a proper build but does show a band aid repair to a poor starting point.
