Networks do have a nast habit of canceling good shows. As a result, Hubs and I try not to watch any new shows during their first year.

We enjoyed Battle Creek and Forever.

Shonda Rhimes is bringing yet another new show this fall. She already has the hits Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder.

Figures, I liked forever, and battle creek, I wanted to like backstrom, I liked the premis but the writing and acting never quite worked. I have watched Greys but not regularly as for Shonda Rhimes other shows I have zero interest in them. There are so many shows that seem to go on year after year that I have no interest in dozens of channels and nothing on.

I have watched Forever and Stalker before. Not regularly. I watch very little local channels. Survivor, Shark Tank, Blue Bloods when I think of it. I usually watch HGTV, DIY Network, AMC, Dicover, National Geographic, QVC, and a couple movie channels, not premium. DH watches hunting and fishing channels.

I'm going to miss Forever.

I am devastated that they cancelled Revenge, The Following, and Stalker. The Revenge final episode was amazing!!

I really enjoyed Stalker..seems every time I add a show to my DVR its a kiss of Death for the show..

I came late to Battle Creek and Scorpion because the titles didn't appeal to me.

Yes, I do watch Scorpion and despite the fact that the critics initially panned it viewership dictated otherwise and it has been renewed.
According to my son there is an on-line petition to retain Forever. I don't know how successful those petitions are but I hope it works.

Knowing the general age range around here, I'd guess that most of our viewing tastes are considered irrelevant by the programming chiefs. It's a spurious premise that older folks are unaffected by advertising, but it is true that young people are the low hanging fruit who haven't had enough experience to not be so easily swayed. Please remember that any network that carries advertising is not in the business of entertaining and pleasing you. Their business is to deliver eyeballs to the advertisers.

Sometimes they do really strange things however, like when NBC cancelled the David Kelly/Kathy Bates show because it delivered an older demographic, even though it was one of their top rated shows, with plenty of nominations and at least one Emmy. Then CBS signed a two year, must play deal for Extant, which has an older producer, and nearly as old cast, also of movie stars, and is science fiction which rarely gets a big audience. Extant is also a muddled mess which makes little sense and has ridiculously slow pacing (i.e., stupid and boring), so they've had to burn it off over a couple of Summers (while people are on vacation or at barbecues) because they signed themselves into a hole.

The thing that kept Scandal on the air, when it was on the brink, was the younger people who were caught up in the love triangle and the twistiness that was supposed to be simmering backstory, rather than the point of the show. The producers did a quick pivot and started playing to that demographic, going full on soap opera in the most unrealistic and outrageous ways, and it worked. If you can talk like a twenty-five-year-old when you tweet, and build an online persona to go with it, and get all your over 54 friends to do the same, you could change the course of a show too...

You are not alone....I always say they cancel the "good shows" because the general public seems to flock to the reality shows and very predictable sit coms, most of which aren't really very funny!

Forever is one of my favorites. Backstrom was "interesting"/entertaining. The others I didnt watch.

Yes Val! Ugh, the reality shows!!! I don't watch any of them.....Shark Tank periodically. Sitcoms? Oh they are so stupid.

Black-ish is very highly rated, I've never seen it, that should be on our watching list I think.

I don't agree with the demographic idea. After all, Snooki And Jwoww (MTV)
is ending after four seasons, final episode on 2/4/2015. I'm totally kidding about the viewing thing. I have no idea why they cancel what they do (as an avid Warehouse 13 fan, I can tell you why that show failed. It changed courses too much and jumped the shark). It could be that the creative team just didn't want to do it any more. Stars want to try different projects. Or not enough viewers.

My 25 and 27 year old sons don't watch any TV so to speak. They watch everything on-line including Forever. I'm not sure how advertising is or is not affected.

The only comedy I watch is The Big Bang Theory which is a show in it's own class.

Seen Blackish. Not impressed. Watch it and tell me if you disagree (not that I'll watch it). I do get a kick out of Modern Family and Goldbergs...my grown daughter likes these. TOTALLY agree that Big Bang is a HOOT! My favorite! I watched Scorpion but kind of fell out of the habit. Can catch up on line :)

Blfenton, that's another reason why people over 54 don't count. The audiences they really need to pull, to keep their advertiser supported business model running, are the young people who are the old people of the future. The demographics based advertising model that they've used since the 1960's is highly flawed. I've read that it was kind of armchaired into place, rather than being scientifically derived, however there's no doubting that people under 30 do not watch live TV except for sports and similar event programming, and that can be done online more and more. They're after as many kids, teens and young adults as they can get before they sever the wire altogether.

Scorpion bugs me. It doesn't even try to be realistic (brainiacs doing stunts that stunt specialists use a green screen for?), while claiming to be based on a real guy, when that real guy has had his claims debunked thoroughly. Why not just call it comic book stuff when it's fantastical fiction?

And another favourite bites the dust. I heard on the radio this morning that CSI has been cancelled. Siiigh.

We definitely have a number of favourite shows. White Collar, (finished after 6 seasons), Castle and the Mentalist, Scott and Bailey (British), Rizzoli and Isles, New Tricks (British), Nashville, Devious Maids, and many more!

The one I liked was The Newsroom. The words were amazingly well crafted most of the time. But even HBO, which doesn't have to please advertisers, requires good ratings.

Of all those listed, we only watch Big Bang. DH would sometimes watch CSI, but I don't. We mostly watch the History Channel, PBS, sports and hunting channels, and the local (Kansas City) news. And the Golf Channel.

Most ratings are now measured as Live +3, so if you watch your DVR's within 3 days of the first airing your viewing will count with the ratings. I don't pretend to understand the advertiser's demo specs, but the bottom line is the networks have to pull in enough ad revenue to offset their licensing fees, per episode. If it doesn't pay for them, they can't afford to continue to license the product. We don't like cancellations either, but it's the nature of the beast. HBO is one of the most prolific and expensive producers at the moment (GoT). Their inventory capital is primarily provided by subscription fees. Streaming and downloading are, AFAIK, funded through subscription sites or pay per view. Those fees replace the advertising revenue stream.

The 15/16 season looks heavy on new medical and crime shows. Not much new in half hour sitcoms that I can see. Sorry your favorites are gone- we don't like to see them go either :(

PS...CSI is ending its run. Talk of a mini event movie for the series finale. Ted Danson is seguing over to CSI:Cyber. Could be interesting.

Well I'm 68 so I'm sure I don't count...I know because I don't care for most "reality" shows..

I watch almost none of the shows mentioned previously, and very few on the major networks, but I have been watching American Crime on ABC on Thursday nights. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that. I think it was an extremely well done show, and the photography was great, the dialogue very smart. I've heard that it was nominated for some awards as a 'limited series' and I was afraid that I'd seen the end of it last night, but it seems there will be a second season. It's a show that keeps you thinking long after it's over.

Yes, American Crime has been renewed although many predicted that it wouldn't be renewed. I started to watch it but it was just too sad for me. You watch better TV than I do.

Oops...I meant Devious Maids, not Mistresses. DH and I enjoy Big Bang Theory, too! That whole cast is a hoot!!

Agree with liking Big Bang Theory...our daughter in her 40's told us about it so I thought maybe we wouldn't care for it but we do....

I'll miss Battle Creek. At first I didn't care for it, but it has gotten better and better. Too bad.

Thanks for the link. I don't get most of the channels but I noted a couple of shows. Under the Dome returns pretty soon as well. For some reason I didn't watch it last year but I'll try again this summer.
