pruning smoke bush into smoke tree
Comments (35)THANK YOU Brandon for an answer to the pruning question!!!! Will be sure to keep the cuts above ground level!! And to clarify what you and Ken are saying about a view to the utility boxes- ...actually, forget it... I just typed out a huge long explanation that I just deleted...lol ...in short (or @ least shortER) with the height of our deck and where our seating is located, the size of the smokebush, and my intentions (clearly understood at least in my own head- haha) don't worry guys, I'll be fine. I always envisioned a multi-stemmed tree, which would still hide the view of the utility boxes. ...don't think I will end up trying to do tree-form after all but do plan on pruning off many shoots and thin the boy down! as always, i appreciate the input from you all :)...See MoreAnyone have any good sized smoke tree'royal purple' pictures?
Comments (4)I have a few. Verticillium wilt has taken out both of mine at one location and two others at another location across town. At least one was a 'Royal Purple' cultivar. The ones I have left are small but healthy (so far). They don't seem to last long around here. Over the years I've watched many a smoke tree "go up in smoke" (well, at least die)....See MoreAnybody in Metuchen here?
Comments (6)Hi Joe, You might also consider a Japanese red maple, in particular, the 'Fireglow' or 'Moonfire' cultivars might be best at holding the red color in shade. Each of these trees would be bright red in spring and fall, but might deepen to dark red, or turn to green in summer. You might want to think about spring and fall color as your focal point. What are the colors of the background trees in spring? What is the color in fall? The redbud would start out purple in spring, remain purple for a few weeks, then turn red for a few weeks, then turn green in summer. In fall it would turn yellow. If your background trees are all yellow, you might want to consider the Japanese red maple instead. The Japanese red maple would start out red, it MIGHT stay red -- I've heard various stories about this -- throughout summer. It would be my guess that if planted in full shade, it would probably turn to green by July or so. (But so will the redbud.) In fall, it would turn a brilliant red color. If your background trees are all reds in fall, then go with the redbud! So, I'm thinking: think about how you can contrast with that backgroud as long or as often as possible. This is an interesting project! Thanks for asking me to help! --Julie...See MoreSmoke tree not smoking very well
Comments (6)These vary in flowering behavior, same as other shrubs. If the foliage remains good-looking all summer lack of water probably not the problem. Maybe future results will be better. Propagations of 'Royal Purple' I've bought and planted have seemed to lack vigor, wanted to be watered. Otherwise Smoke Bush should grow well here without coddling - as long as exposure is sunny, soil is well-drained and not infested with Verticillium. Noted making up part of the continental climate scrub growing near the Great Wall, along with peach trees and lilacs. Perhaps the most impressive specimens I've seen have been in eastern WA....See Moreilovemytrees
