Green leaves falling off rose bush. HELP!!

5 springs ago I moved into my home and my husband and I discovered we had a rose bush growing in our front yard after digging up and destroying a yucca that had gone wild. The rose bush slowly started to grow and we let it grow so we could try to find out the type we had. By the beginning of our 3rd spring the rose bush was taller than our 6 ft privacy fence so we pruned the bush down to about 3 ft! But we still did not get any blooms. Finally by our 4th spring, (and the bush being full but well ventilated), it was full of beautiful dark red blooms. Once all the blooms opened, the bush dropped all of its green leafs. There were not any black spots or yellowing of the leaves. We kept the bush watered throughout the summer and it barely put on new leaves and never produced additional blooms. We also fertilized and treated with insecticides and wetable dusting sulphur without success. Well, our 5th spring is here now and the bush has repeated its actions from last spring except it only produced a few blooms insteaad of being covered in them. Can someone tell me what might be going on with this "wild" rose bush and what I should do to to it?

It may be a Dr Huey rootstock from a winter killed rose. Do you live in a colder climate? Like Iowa where you could get a rose of the Buck variety. Or another rose suited to your climate.

I live in Dallas, TX and the temperature hws been as high 86 with high humidity. My 22 other rose bushes are doing great and don't have this issue.

Couldn't tell you about azaeleas since I don't know if they respond the way roses do, but about the roses, they are just suffering from a little transplant shock. Just pluck off and destroy the yellow leaves and wait for about a month or so to see what the roses do. By the way, I wasn't clear if you meant the roses are NOW planted in containers or in the ground. Either way, they need good drainage (and plenty of sun) or they will get yellow leaves that fall off. If your drainage is good, then it may be that you are watering them too much--or if they are in containers, that they are setting on trays that retain the water, which is too much for the plants. Other things can cause yellowing leaves also--like under-watering! But if you are like most new rose owners, you are more likely over-doing the care and watering too much as a result. But you will have to determine whether your soil is moist or very dry. I still think it is mostly transplant shock. Let us know how it's going in about a month--OK? Kate

I'm not sure what your picture is supposed to be showing that pertains to BS and missing leaves. What I see is a beautiful rose with many leaves, including new leaves, and lots of gorgeous blooms. So what is the problem? If you are asking what to do about BS, get some Bayer Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs (get that name--NOT one of the other Bayer products)--at Lowes or online. Buy a small sprayer container for about $20 -- I got mine at Home Depot but other similar stores probably also carry them. Follow Bayer's directions carefully, but make sure you watered the roses deep and well the day before, and pick an early morning time for spraying, before the breeze picks up and swats you in the face with fungicide. Spray with that once or twice at 10 day interval, and probably you will have killed the BS. And with really hot weather coming, you may not have any more BS attacks until cooler weather in the Fall becomes more conducive the BS. But based on your pic, I'd say keep on watering your rose and enjoy it! Kate

I had precisely the same situation: a store-bought plant that was doing great for a while under fluorescent light (a CFL in a gooseneck lamp), then the lower leaves started yellowing, showing spots, etc. I took a really close look under a low-power microscope, and found out I had mites. These little suckers are nearly transparent, unlike the black ones that are relatively easy to spot. I believe that the plant cuts off nutrients to the infested leaves as a defense mechanism, since the mites can't suck the juices from a dry leaf. Use a miticide if you're OK with chemical treatments; Bayer's 3-in-1 has a particularly effective agent in it. If not, or if your state hasn't approved the stuff for sale (you cannot buy it in NY), you can try my approach: fill a bucket with soapy water (dish detergent, ca. 1/2 tsp per gallon), and shove the entire plant, upside-down, into the water. Slosh it around, and up-and-down, for about a minute. This removes the bugs, drowns the ones who won't let go, and I think it might even damage the eggs (tiny white specks on the bottom of the leaves.) Repeat once a week for at least 3 weeks (the mites have a 10-day life cycle), and maybe once a month after that to keep 'em down. The mites prefer a dry environment, so this treatment, along with misting, will prevent them from doing noticeable damage. I think the real problem with keeping these plants indoors is that the mites are not exposed to their natural predators, so their population can explode very quickly. They are incredibly persistent, and they will keep coming back time and time again if you don't manage to kill off every last one of them (and every last egg as well!) Unless you like having ladybugs crawling around the house, you're stuck with regular washing, or chemical treatments, to keep them under control. Yeah that sounds like a good idea Sheila...I never thought of something like that? How do those work exactly? And Seil I didn't plant in cardboard as in 'packaging the Rose came in' I mean I had moving style boxes I broke down and then I wet them down really good to put under mulch along the slope to deter weeds. I made sure to leave about 5" or so around each plant bare with a little mulch. I did however leave the soil on it when I planted, I didn't try to make bareroot? You think that could've caused it? I just want to know how to save these ...also it rained last night...not sure how hard because it ended at least an hour or two before I woke up so when I stuck finger in soil down so deep that I had no finger left! It felt pretty moist all the way down...but idk how much rain feel so idk if that could happen from the rain we just had overnight? And today has been overcast with next to no sun all day..so sun wasn't out to dry it out.

I'd pull it out after the first year. :-) Replace it with a pretty rambler. Are there any pictures of the blooms?

Sounds like Dr Huey to me. Get rid of it and replace it with a repeat bloomer suitable for your local environment. Ask neighbours what grows well for them if you are not sure. If you like Dr Huey, cut it right back after blooming so that it puts out flowering canes.:-)

I would want to find out why healthy green leaves fell from the plant, Even Dr. Huey should not do that. It gets bs and or mildew first. Leaves yellow before falling off. What would cause heathy leaves too fall from a plant? No plant should drop good healthy leaves.

Dr Huey is bare here all summer. That seems to be normal for him LOL.
Somehow he still blooms in the spring.

Using 3 different chemicals , The chemical salt fertilzer , and the insecticide aren't too good , but the third chemical is an acid and would totally change the biology in the soil . The insecticide isn't good for all other life around the rose. Kids pets birds.

Dr. Huey drops it's leaves here too. That's its major flaw. It can put on that beautiful display once every spring but the rest of the year it's an ugly gangly looking mess. I think you should replace it with something beautiful and healthy that you'll love!

How do I get rid of it since it grew wild. My husband and I never saw a root system for a rose bush while we were digging up the yucca 5 years ago, but the rose just started growing some how a few weeks later.

There is a root system. Follow the canes under the surface of the soil, digging as you go, you'll find it eventually. And, I agree, it is Dr. Huey, a once-blooming (in the spring) climber, and it can drop leaves without showing blackspot.

There are some nice photos of dr Huey on the antique forum. Chances are it was bare when you cleaned out the yucca and did not see it
