I'm kinda shocked people don't "Get this....."!!! The walls WILL NEVER look the same! If you put a gallon in the middle of the room, & turned on a "magic spinning shaker" to evenly coat everything, & then went away for 2 weeks........ Even tho' we know it IS the same "Film of Paint" EVERYWHERE, every "Plane" of color appears different!!! We know the answer why folks! * HUMAN eyes do a lot of "Blending". * Some walls only get half the light relative to it's neighbor. * Color-temperature of Lamp bulbs could be way different than natural sunlight. * Flatter-sheened paints will show a color differenty than a Gloss will. * We KNOW colors will look different in a N-facing bedroom, relative to a S-facing one!! Sure you can use the same trim. It's easy. You have a riser from the cabinets to the ceiling, and then continuous crown of the same profile around the whole room, including cabinets. You color match the crown paint to the cabinets.

I think uncommon. I used to have a neighbor who was a commercial painter. Often, his house walls had different colors, subtle differences. He said he did this because he got the paint for free, the colors were similar, and his wife liked changing the color of the front of the house every 5 years. I currently have a neighbor who just finished painting his house. The front is lighter than the sides, and one back wall is a mural. One cannot see the front and sides at the same time. Foliage prevents this. I don’t know about complementary color, maybe if the complementary color difference is subtle or white.

Leave the fireplace. It fits in the room. Is that actually paneling, or did someone just frame in parts of the wall over the sheetrock? If that is what was done, I would consider removing all that trim on the walls, fill in the nail holes, sand it and prime it and paint the walls, all a solid color. All that trim and framing are way too busy. Once you get furniture in the room, it seems to me, it would look over busy and not very nice. Nice sized room. Nice fireplace and floors.
