Anyone ever been to a 'living wake?' WWYD?
Comments (30)Thank you all for your responses, which have helped me decide that I will definitely go! I'm not actually ashamed of showing any emotion. It's more not wanting to get emotional when trying to relate my fun memories, lest it create an awkward 'downer' moment, when my cousin is wanting a 'fun filled gathering,' so to speak. But as many of you have pointed out, even if I do become tearful, most likely I will not be the only one. I also agree that if I don't go, it would probably disappoint my cousin, who really wants to see all the people he cares about, before he passes. I plan to take the advice of those who suggested I write down what I intend to say ahead of time. I don't want to start to speak, and perhaps get overwhelmed and totally forget the funny anecdotes about my cousin, that I would like to share. bpath, my family's heritage is Irish and most of us are just the 2nd generation not born there. But while a typical 'Irish Wake' is similar to a 'Living Wake' in that neither are somber affairs, and both involve laughter, story telling, and toasting,...the regular Irish Wake is done after the person has died, but before the funeral. It's held at the home of the deceased, and the revelry is meant to honor the person who has passed, but they obviously don't get to 'participate' in the festivities. arcy, there will be no other type of wake. My cousins siblings and his wife and children will be with him at Hospice at the end of his life, as well as a priest, as my cousin is religious. But there will be no 'viewing' nor any funeral. He wishes to be cremated, and that the last time everyone (other than those mentioned above) see him, will be while he is still mobile and 'able to eat, drink and be merry.' I'll post an update after I return from his 'living wake' Thank you all for your support and encouragement....See MoreHave you ever been in the woods...

Comments (51)I've had near misses in a vehicle but the one that stands out the most to me happened while white water rafting. The second or third year we went rafting down the Snake river and the 2 man inflatable rafts weren't available so we rented the hard plastic ones. Oh man I hate those things! They tipped so easily compared to the inflatables. While going down an easier area we tipped over. Unknown to us it was an area with a major undertow. I ended up pinned between a rock and the raft. My husband (then boyfriend) was holding onto my arms so I wouldn't get pulled under. I just knew that if he let go i wouldn't come back up. We found out later that this undertow area claims a few lives each year. My future BIL was there in another raft but my FIL had not put the ropes in the rafts so there was no way to pull us out. After what felt like forever, but probably no more than 5-10 minutes, another rafter came by and lent us his rope. We got out and needless to say I was done rafting that trip and swore never to go again. A year later with the promise of only inflatables and ropes in the rafts we went again. On one run hubby and I were behind his dad and brother. We got to a wider and very calm part of the river when I looked ahead and saw a dog in the water. I hollered back at my hubby and we started paddling towards it. Hubby is questioning what we will do with it but I knew it had to be rescued. As we got closer I realized it wasn't a dog but a man in is late 60s or 70s. We got over to him and he looked to be in shock. His eyes were wide open and seemed to be checked out but he was at least alert enough to hold onto the side of the raft as I also held onto him. I tried to say calming things like "we've got you. You are fine" while trying not to cry but I'm not even sure he heard me. He had a life vest on but it wasn't snug and wasn't holding him up properly. We got to the side and then really had no idea what to do. While we were sitting there going over options a larger raft caught up with us and pulled over. He had fallen out on a rapid and was swept away faster than they were. We said good byes quickly wanting to give them some privacy. The man was clearly not doing especially well and it felt like we were invading. I am forever glad I went rafting one last time and able to return the favor to another rafter....See MoreEver applied or been on a game show?
Comments (18)I was in the audience at The Price is Right in 1983. I was in the row behind the contestants, so I was on camera. I also applied for Wheel of Fortune but didn’t make pass the first audition. A guy I worked with got on The price is right and had an almost perfect game. He was the first on stage, won his game, spun 1.00 on the wheel to get the $1000 and ended up winning his showcase, missed winning both by a few hundred. His showcase had a car in it. Due to the high shipping costs to Canada, he finally settled for $20,000.00 US dollars....See More- 11 years ago
