Lawn Tractor Engine Speed

So I have an older John Deere lawn tractor I've used exclusively for cutting grass to this point. When cutting you set the throttle/idle speed to fast (rabbit) and do your thing. However I just purchased a trailer and a 15 gallon sprayer I use for maintaining my landscaping, and it works great. I'm wondering if I need the engine cranked to fast for this task? I ask because when I stop the tractor and am spraying a given site the thing sits there roaring away, presumably wasting gas and definitly making a lot of noise. I've gotten in the habit of lowering the idle speed to minimum while I spray, but don't want to keep working the throttle up and down every few minutes. Can I just set the throttle to the run position (between fast and slow, closer to slow) and leave it there? I don't want to put strain on the components by running the engine underpowered but like I said could do without the noise when spraying.
