He keeps calling my mother and says "Ruth are you there?"

Obvious nuisance call. It does upset her tho. I keep telling her to not answer.

Supposedly from NC. Googled the # someone did say that "they" said you could unsubscribe by holding on and pressing the # for it. Said it was a nonprofit, so Do not call list won't help.

Help!

Some telephones have a feature to block unwanted calls from specific numbers- my Panasonic cordless phone does. Alternatively, most telephone carriers - phone company, cable company- have a customer service feature that allows customers to specify calls to block. Check with the carrier to see if that's offered.

Call them back and tell them your concerns, ask her to be removed. Surely, if they're nonprofit, they'll want to help.

I have friends, collectors of art and fine antiques. One Sunday morning they discovered that their wall over the chimney was on fire. Too much sitting by the fire the night before. The firemen came, chopped a hole in the wall and poured water on it ( in January!..In Iowa!), managed to put down enough plastic to direct the water outside. My friends put a large empty frame over the blackened hole, called it "minimalist art" and we drank champagne to minor damage. SCAM SCAM...eventually they ask for your credit card numbers. THEY HAVE NO STREET ADDRESS AND NO WAY TO HAVE YOU CALL THEM. The only recourse, I've found, is to report the number to the FTC. FIrst, register your number on the do not call list at http://www.donotcall.gov Once you have been registered, report each and every call, the date and time of call. It takes 2 minutes to do it. This company uses numbers in many, many area codes. I've googled at least 10 or more. All the same. I talked to the guy today and told him to take me off the list and he said I had to call my bank to request that. THIS IS ILLEGAL, people. According to donotcall.gov, You may file a complaint if you received an unwanted call after your number was on the National Registry for 31 days. You may also file a complaint if you received a call that used a recorded message instead of a live person (whether or not your number was on the Registry). AND I FIND THIS INTERESTING... "A consumer who receives a telemarketing call despite being on the registry will be able to file a complaint with the FTC, either online or by calling a toll-free number. Violators could be fined up to $16,000 per incident. "

Take a deep breath Jannie, nothing to fear. You handled it perfectly. I doubt they'll call back. It's was a phishing scheme to get info. You showed the caller you're too smart to be caught and they were frustrated, which is why they hung up. Good for you! Pat yourself on the back and have a relaxing beverage. Scammers are out there.

I think you can use *69 on your phone right after a call like that and it will tell you where the call came from also if you have the numbr do a google on it and it will come up as an often used number for scams most likely

Snidely we have new Panasonic phones and thanks to your post I've blocked a toll-free number that keeps calling but it's just dead air when I check messages. I didn't know I had that feature on the phone! In the past that was only available by paying for it thru our phone company.

Saw this when I googled the number:

I have been receiving calls from this number several times a day for
weeks now. Part of my voice-mail message states that if this is a
courtesy call, I'm not interested. Upon hearing this they hang up. But
it doesn't stop them from calling back. Today I got sick of it and
called the number....980-265-8601.... back. I rec'd a message stating
that I was called on behalf of "one of our non-profit organizations". If
you stay on the line you will be given choices. One of which is to be
removed from their calling list. I believe the choice is number 3, but
wait it out to be sure. The pause in between is long, probably on
purpose so that you think you lost connection and hang up, be patient.
Recording says it may take 72 hours to go through. So now that I know
what it is about I may just answer and give them a piece of my mind!

"National Police Association" appears to be a totally bogus operation, not even listed on Charity Navigator. So if you replied in any way, you just verified a live phone number to a bunch of crooks.

National Police? Wouldn't that be the US Marshals' office? Or do they mean NAPO, the national associate of police organizations? Yep, not real. You're right sushi.

be very careful about calling the numbers back often out of the usa and wait till you get a bill! always use the area code search...

.lol...we've been getting this annoying call from jamacia, asking for fil (he's in a nursing home but we're his mailing address)...well I put on such an act.... omg he passed away and started "crying" ...asked him not call anymore...we'll see how good an actress I was, lol....

I'm on that worthless do not call list and every day without fail we get two or nine calls from some online pharmacy. I now just pick up the phone, set it down, and eventually they hang up. Sucks

I get only a few ... but quite often I'm not in the house - like, now, when I'm at the library, yakking to you folks ... or with the Old Farts at one church, drinking coffee ... or in a group at the other church, discussing articles in our church-related magazine.

Or, now that it's (soon to be) summer ... out in the garden.

The main ones are from the lady wanting to get me a better rate on my credit card: I tell her that sooner or later she's going to want my credit card number ... and NO BODY gets that over the phone (certainly not on unsolicited calls).

The other is the guy who says there's a problem, in my computer ... and I tell him that I haven't been connected to the internet for a couple of years ... and isn't he ashamed of himself, taking money for being a bare-faced liar!

First of all DO NOT call them back and DO NOT give them your number. DO NOT think that they will be considerate. They are TELEMARKETERS!

This number is not for one fundraising operation. It is a "professional" fundraising operation who harasses people for a large percentage of the take. There's been several threads on how to deal with telemarketing scumbags. Your best bet is a call blocking device.

Just hang up as soon as there is a pause when you answer. Hang up if it isn't your Aunt Margaret. Hang up. Don't even engage the caller. They aren't telemarkers, they are crooks.

If you don't recognize the phone number, don't even answer it. Why engage talking to crooks?

My husband, once he has answered the phone will just lay the phone down. About an hour later he will hang it up. We have caller ID so if anyone calls in the meantime we will know who it is. We kept getting calls from a collection agency. They called all the numbers at the same time. 2 cells and a house phone. This person they were calling for we did not know. May have had one of our numbers at one time. It was so annoying. They called as many as 8 times a day. We talked to everyone but the president. Finally they just quit calling.
