Look what I saw today
Comments (4)Tigers use a variety of tree species (more than 9 different families) and develop a preference as they age (aging seems like the wrong verb for an insect that lives only 1-3 weeks). They eventually develop a preference for Tulip trees. That is what they lay eggs on for us in the house. -Elisabeth Absence of behavioral induction in oviposition preference of Papilio glaucus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) Scriber, JM Great Lakes Entomologist [GREAT LAKES ENTOMOL.]. Vol. 26, no. 2, pp. 81-95. 1993. This study addressed the possible behavioral induction effects of previous exposure to several specific host plants on subsequent host "preference hierarchy" and "specificity" (i.e., how far down the ranking order a female will go) in the most polyphagous swallowtail butterfly in the world, Papilio glaucus (Papilionidae). Multi-choice preference bioassays using individual females in revolving arenas were used to assess one of the potentially most significant non-genetic sources of variation: learned (or induced) oviposition preferences. Results of the 4-choice studies using tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera; Magnoliaceae), black cherry (Prunus serotina; Rosaceae), quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides; Salicaceae), and hoptree (Ptelea trifoliata; Rutaceae), fail to show any significant oviposition preference induction with two-day prior exposure to any of the host species tested. It appears that the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, while polyphagous as a species (feeding on more than 9 families of plants), and variable in its population responses to oviposition favorites, has what may be considered a genetic "hard-wiring" at an individual level, with no evidence that preferences change with recent oviposition experience. Older females were not and did not become more random in their choices, and in fact increased in their specificity for tulip tree leaves....See MoreI saw this video today and I can't believe it works
Comments (8)awe that's too bad it didn't work for you guys :( I guess I have an easy to brain wash mind. lol. my daughter too. I watched it and cleaned my desk. Then I went into my kitchen and envisioned it clean too. and I couldn't stop cleaning until it was done. Pretty weird. So that was on Friday, and I'm proud to say my kitchen and desk are still clean!!! I really should envision my other rooms clean but I'm not ready to go crazy like that again. It was weird because I couldn't stop. And now, when one of the kids or my husband puts a dish in the sink, I kinda feel compelled to clean it. I only watched the video 2x on Friday. It worked on some kind of nerve in my head even though it looked so stupid. When I envisioned my desk and kitchen clean I really saw it when my eyes were closed and seeing it clean in my mind made me so happy. I felt like a huge weight was off my shoulders Next thing you know, I'm like a cleaning freak in a semi dream like state. Well that's not what it was really like but it sure didn't feel like it was me. sorry can't find the right words to describe it. I'm sorry it didn't work for any of you, but I'm soooo glad it worked on me. DH is happy too. I hope it's long lasting, because I never want to go back to a messy kitchen again. :) Laura...See More'Mingo... look what I saw today!' says Stewie
Comments (2)When my sister was really young a neighbor girl had a large pet rabbit, it was a male. They were playing w/ rabbit in yard and he got away for a while couldn't find him. A month later or so we figured out were he was, with a regular wild rabbit because they wild baby rabbits looked just like him. This was probably over 30 years ago. But I remember seeing those big bunnies around my parents neighborhood for a few years....See MoreWhat is this on my lawn I noticed it when mowing today :x
Comments (22)Is this KBG grass? No need to do anything if so as it spreads quickly. Otherwise maybe wait till fall to spot seed as needed. Could just be some stray animal pee. Your photos, while great in the shade, are still a good 12" too far away. You need to get maybe 4" away from the blades at the edge of the brown spot. Having said that, I copied and enlarged your image. I see some yellowing from the tip down about a half inch on several of the blades at the border, but nothing like pics of fungus I've seen online (please be aware I don't know much about fungus ID). Most of the grass just beyond the edge of the brown patch looks very healthy with no sign of fungus as much as my untrained eye from too far away can tell, so maybe it is an isolated incident. I would just keep an eye on it, but you seriously need to do something about your watering schedule....See Moremama goose_gw zn6OH
