For instance, hardening off plants, or getting them ready to face the great outdoors unattended. Tall, thin-stemmed plants can be crippled by winds that normally would never affect a shorter, bushier plant. (Plants in the back of a pick-up truck are usually buffered from real strong wind - I drove around way more than 5 miles with a truck load and the soil on top didn't even come close to drying.) They will require a deeper hole or longer trench to plant - not a problem if your soil is good and/or you have time. With energy going into the stem production, rather than foliage, you will have basically fewer "workers" in your factory - leaves collect sunlight to drive photosynthesis. You can think of plants as primal beings - they have a survival instinct. Just as animals will fight for food if there is a shortage, the plant does the same. But the stem growth wins, because they believe if they grow taller they will get more food. The formation of roots is related to the formation of leaves and branches; more leaves and branches mean larger and more roots. If internode length or the amount of stems compared to roots and foliage are excessive, seedlings can actually topple over, especially if you do not use a fan to force them to "toughen up." Lack of strong light does not directly cause long internodes (legginess). It is a factor of light, heat, water and nutrients combined. I can grow tomato plants in a north facing window and have them look acceptable, but I need to keep the temps down in the 50s, not use any fertilizer and water them only when the soil gets dry. It just will take longer for the plants to get to transplant size. I am a very firm believer in "grow your own way." But I also believe that people asking for advice need to be given what is considered to be the optimal way of doing something. YMMV, Mike...See MoreBargain Alert Thread
Comments (22)This heatsink with fan for "CPU VGA Video Card " is being sold for $1.34 (bargain): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Latest-Cooling-Fan-Heatsink-Cooler-For-CPU-VGA-Video-Card-DMX/172218774358?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D36861%26meid%3D9fec3b65fcbc41ebb38012335da16bdd%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D262453359890 It appears to be the same as the ones for 10W LEDs being sold for $2.65 (not a bargain): http://www.ebay.com/itm/10W-High-Power-LED-gold-Aluminum-Heatsink-with-fan-light-Cooling-Cooler-DC12V-/151991925593?hash=item23636cbb59:g:F6UAAOSwFqJWhdC6 As you can see here, http://www.ebay.com/itm/10W-Cold-White-6000-6500K-High-Power-LED-10W-Driver-44mm-Lens-10w-Heatsink-kit/252404211912?_trksid=p999999.c100623.m-1&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160323102634%26meid%3D26de59530335488087d76cd4a03335f9%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D151991925593 the holes on the heatsink can be used to mount a lens and reflector for $2.90 (not a bargain). But, the holes on the lens mounting bracket needs to be extended inwards about 0.5mm because the fit is not exact. Easy enough to do with a hand drill. Comments (50)Even thin lights may show when you are sitting and look into the kitchen. It seems most new kitchen installs are done with a light rail added to hide the lights behind. We did an update several years ago and kept our old cabinets which had no light rail or moulding below the boxes. DH is rather handy and we bought some oak (our cabinets are oak) corner moulding about 3/4 or an inch wide. I got stain matched up at a good paint store. Cloverdale I believe and they can make stain to match if you bring in a door from your cabinets. We installed that below the cabinets and I stained and varnished the. They gave a little update to the cabinet look and do a great job of hiding our UCL's. They look like they were always on the cabinets and match perfectly. He also installed our UCL and drilled small holes in the bottom of the cabinet, fished the wire thru them and then behind, thru the wall studs up to a soffit where we have access. Wired in an on and off and dimmer switch in our Zephyr fan hood since it has lots of room in the metal body. Virtually no wire showing and the light switch is with the fan light switch. DH is so innovative!...See MoreNew indoor light set-up
Comments (15)Oh yeah, I can't believe the nice full and tight growth I get too. The ones I have close to 6 inches don't burn at all, and that is even after taking them out from a box of darkness from shipment the day after. They don't throw off much heat or any at all. And Pluto is right, I turn mine off too to be able to water or I would get a headache. I think these lights mimic the 'real sun' as close a possible, and if not, there is no explanation other than that to explain such great growth, better that any other light I have ever used.....See MoreYuan Gong Hamilton ON CANADA 6b
