Has anyone ever tried an olive tree
Comments (10)It's been over 6 months since our last deep freeze, so I thought it was about time to give an up-date. All of the Olive Trees showed signs of freeze damage. Many of the leaves and smaller branches turned brown and eventually died. I would estimate that about 1/3 of the outer foliage had some sort of damage. I waited until May before removing any of the burnt looking foliage whatsoever. It's now the middle of August and the trees look green and healthy. The Oleanders and Changsha Orange didn't make it. However, I am happy to report, after turning all brown and looking quite dead, the Climbing Figs made a 100% recovery. In fact, they look better than they have in years (probably due to all the new growth). Looking around the neighborhood, it appears that most gardens suffered similar damage as mine. One can still see some dead limbs and leaf burn which hasn't yet been removed. A few homes lost some marginal hardy plants/trees like Eucalyptus and Sago Palms. But overall, it's now hard to tell that we ever experienced such cold weather. I am now back in Ireland, completing the end of a two-year assignment. If our Olive Trees make it through this winter, I plan to attach photos so everyone can see....See Moreis sauce that has some olive oil in it able to be canned?
Comments (25)Food Saver has NEVER advised anyone to use that system to make any home canning safe. To make home canning safe, a high acid is needed, as well as processing times for foods that contain lower acid, which would need a pressure canning. Because I have been canning a very delicate thin skinnned pepperoncini, and using a special vacuum system to remove all the air from these peppers, and also force in all vinegar and salt brine, then fill canning jars with these peppers that have been exposed to the special vacuum (NOT A Food Saver vacuum) my process involves no heat of any kind, but instead, a high acid, and a high amount of vacuum with no chance of any air that would be trapped in the jars. My peppers are safe, and have no chance of being contaminated by any bacterial botulism or any other kind of spoilage. The ONLY think I used the vacuum process for is a specific pepper type, with no added water, only full strength 5% vinegar and pickling salt as the brine....See MoreCan I plant a new olive tree where one has died and been removed?
Comments (6)'Scorch' (leaf burn) has seldom killed any tree and olives are particularly well suited to CA's drought, so I'd have issues with the diagnosis you have received. Pruning, even heavy pruning (and olives are routinely pruned hard), would not make the tree any less drought tolerant nor would it necessarily encourage leaf scorch. I'd be inclined to have the tree evaluated by a certified arborist that knows his stuff or take clear photos and samples to your local extension service office for an accurate diagnosis before leaping to any other conclusions. If the tree is in fact dying, replanting with another olive in the same location is dependent on what the tree is dying from.....some pathogens remain present and active in the soil indefinitely (like armillaria or verticillium wilt, to both of which olives are susceptible) and replanting in the exact location with the same or another susceptible species is not advised. The description of the symptoms could indicate that one or the other of these may be at cause but that would need to be confirmed by a plant pathologist or someone else skilled in these matters. Bottom line is you must get the problem correctly identified before you can make any replanting decisions....See MoreOlive Tree has Orange-ish Thing on it
Comments (11)Boy, that's a lot bigger than expected!! But it doesn't really shed any light on the scale of your "growth" with respect to the rest of the tree. Can you take photo at a bit more of a distance from the first shots to show the whatever it is relative to the tree overall? The first photos are just not clear enough. Does the growth have solid, woody feel to it? Does that planter have a solid base or is it just a bricked-in raised planting area? And can you give us an idea of your location?...See Morezkathy z7a NC
