It's not the refrigerator brand that determines compressor longevity (or so my fantastic appliance repair guy tells me) it's the installation. On a record high temperature day in July, we were his seventh service call for the day. "Counter depth- skip it", he said. "Anything where the compressor's upfront pushing the air out fails sooner or later. If it's a lower end fridge with one compressor instead of two, count on sooner." He added, "get a regular depth fridge and give it some space back there. It's no accident that I get at least five calls a day to replace compressors when the temperature hits triple digits. You want a minimum of 3" wall space behind the unit, 5" is better. People used to do that when the idea was that a fridge stuck out a bit. A wall vent at compressor height would be even better. Give it room to breathe." He likes kitchenaid, said he has fewer repair calls on that one. He had trouble 2 years ago getting parts for Samsung in a timely way. I don't know if that's still the issue, my appliances haven't needed service since. Diva

If you want to keep the verticals, consider the fabric type for a softer look. I have verticals on one of my sliders for ease of use and control of light. I also own dogs and I've had no problems with the fabric vanes getting dirty or collecting dog hair. I don't like the 'valance' that comes with some verticals. If the rail isn't a trimline style (like Hunter Douglas) then I'd recommend using a wood cornice or decorative wood trim piece. Drape panels are an option, but after reading that you have trouble with dog hair and slobber, it's unlikely you'll be happy with them. Also, if you stay with verticals, I'd go with a color that blends with the wall.

Jjam, thank you very much for confirming what I thought, that it does come in a deeper, duller burgundy. You're right, if I want it I should request a sample first, rather than risking wasting about $50. Jejvtr, congratulations on your hemming and on your first Roman shade! I never did one but I've read the directions and it looks quite involved and time consuming. How sad you don't like the fabric. Would you like it if you dyed it? That would spoil the lining, though. Will you sell it or use it? I wonder if it would be perfect for anyone here? You should at least post it and brag about your accomplishments. I've thought about doing one some time, and maybe several here have too. Here is a pic of the window after I took the old valance down but before I got the new table, chairs and chandy. I did the math and I think if I want to do the topper as discussed I need about 4.5 yards. If I want to make the bottom of the curtain a contrast, I need 5 yards. I have one other thought, and that is putting border band on the bottom and inside edge of 2 panels. These are my fave curtains I saved a picture of. Horchow used to carry them... I think I'll go to Joanns and see what they have in the way of decorative stripes, or whatever in their Home Dec department.

We also have the one fixed pane door. I can see two reason have both doors open. One is if you plan on having large furniture and this will be the only way to get them in the room. The second is if you live in an area where you would want to have lots of airflow. I have no idea if you can do something with screens on a double door - we would have too many unwanted creatures coming in the house to not have screens. We considered the double door option, but chose the one fixed because of price and weather - there is much less area with one fixed pane for cold air to penetrate in the winter. I live in SD so that is a big concern. We have a screen, and do have the door open a lot in the summer. Cathy
