Best edging material to separate mulched tree beds from grass?

Our orchard of 15 trees will be going in this week. We plan to use woodchips to mulch approximately 9 square feet around the base of each tree. The trees will be planted on a slope, which makes me think some form of edging will be needed. I'm trying to ascertain what the best edging material would be, assuming we determine it is required.

I'd prefer something that will allow for minimal maintenance in the form of mowing and trimming. Ease of installation, price, and effectiveness at separating the grass from the mulch would be the other considerations.

Possibilities include using plastic edging in circular form around the base of each tree, cutting treated landscape timbers to form squares or octagons, or not using any edging at all. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
