How long for bare root bleeding heart to show above ground?
Comments (10)Yeah linnea56 give them a little more time. Hell, give them until next spring. I don't have experience with Dicentra bare roots but I do have two dicentras: one I planted, one came with the house. Both have grown to be massive in size. The one that was original to the house got rolled on by one of my dogs - the following year it didn't grow too much during the growing season but this year has come back in full force. I grew a few ferns from bareroots last year. A few never sprouted anything until THIS year which is why I say give until next spring if you can...See MoreWhat is your Heart's Desire to Grow, But Haven't Succeeded Yet?
Comments (14)That was a topic of discussion on Gardening by the Yard today - catalpa trees. I see them everywhere, some look like they were "intentionally" planted and others look like volunteers, so I bet they reseed. Like all those darn elm seedlings, pecan seedlings, and rose of sharon seedlings that I have to prick out of the garden every single dad gum year! I would love to have the vitex also OKC1, but I really don't have a place for it, unless....I cut one of the pines down, and that's a distinct possibility. And its working around these pines (I do love the mulch, mind you), the people who lived here before me planted two on either side of the front yard - they were their kids Christmas trees, they said. But, they did not take into account the size of the trees. These trees are about 30 feet tall, one is about as wide as it is tall, and the other half as wide. They encroach on my driveway, which is very tiny little driveway to begin with, and the other encroaches on the neighbor's driveway. He has offered to cut that one down for me, and if I can rent a whatever those thingabobbers are called that grind the wood into mulch, I have agreed to let him do it. The only place for it would be on my front easement, and last year when the City's water pipe was leaking, they dug up about half of that space to get to it for repairs. Then they take their own sweet time to come back and spread the soil around. I don't know about the paper mulberry, but my contorted mulberry is a gem. It's now about 15-20' tall, with HUGE heart-shaped bright light green leaves and the branches are contorted like Harry Lauder's Walking Stick. It flowers (catkins), but the flowers are small and very insignificant, and doesn't fruit. So, it's a very clean tree. A chocolate tree? Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing to have..... Comments (119)Happy Tuesday! WE HAVE A WINNER!!! :D MARGO!!! I double checked and you are the Big VALENTINE Bingo W~I~N~N~E~R :D Can you please send me your addy and I will be getting out your Supa Dupa Prize this weekend. Shirley, I was out the other day doing the same thing. Putting back my flower tags took longer than I thought with the ground still a little frozen. So I put them under rocks for safe keeping. I planted a tiny, I mean teeny tiny, little yellow foxglove baby that I got from a friend of mine. I was so astonished to see that it has at least tripled in size. It is planted in the back of the house, by the foundation, where there is very little snow and no wind. Is it possible that it could have grown over the winter? I was just shocked to see it. Ruby, that sounds like a terrific HEART. Chocolate and Butterflies! What more could you ask for??? Corrine, your right! I love to laugh... and best of all IT'S FREE :D Ellie, I hope your feeling better. There hasn't been that much of a winter to do "sowing". I do jiffies under lights, but have been wondering with such a mild winter are the ws'ing jugs outside bursting with bloom or are they not growing at all because they don't have the snow for insulation? I also would like to remind everyone about the rate and review forum. We don't do it nearly enough on the round robin, and for some of the newbies, it really helps to establish them. Thanks! Comments (13)I have not heard this story, but years ago, an old-timer(Mr. Lambert) told me about the bleeding heart flower. "Finding Grandma's glasses" Taking the pedals off to have two rabbits, then seeing a hand held HARP, removing the sides of the Harp, to see a bottle, then splitting the bottle, ( at the top or bottom?) and having a pair of eye glasses, that he referred to as Grandma's glasses. My grandaughter, Julia, did this every summer, for years. Her joy, in this accomplishment , still makes me smile....See More- 9 years ago
