Do I have to till in grass I planted over winter?

This is probably a ridiculous question but I have a raised bed I created last spring. Before winter, I planted a mix of grasses from my local garden supply. Well, I started turning it over and I am getting a great work out even with the help of a tiller attachment on a yard trimmer. My question is do I have to turn the grass in really well? Whatever the answer, how would you accomplish it? I don't recall ever having to till ground before, hence why I am looking for help. The tiller attachment is helping but I have a health condition and this is far more difficult than I anticipated. At least I know I have beyond healthy soil for the stuff to grow so well.

What kind of grass? Usually people plant something such as alfalfa so that when it is tilled in, it doesn't necessarily try to grow again and also will provide nutrients for the bed.

Otherwise, if it's some other kind of grassy plant that you already know the value of, then just keep tilling. It's what was in the plan when you planted it. However it gets tilled or turned over, that will have to be done. If it does die off after one round of tilling, then that's all you need to do.

It is a seed mix picked up at my local garden store this past fall. I would have to look but I believe the brand mentioned green manure and a cow but a quick Google search didn't readily information up. I will check it out later today. If the grass still appears alive, I will turn it over by hand. I know it was in the plans but this is my first garden as well as first cover crop so I just asked the owners of said store what to use. I didn't expect the stuff to grow a foot plus tall either...lol.

Maybe related or can point you in the right direction. I recently visited an area resort on Cape Cod where a golf course was being renovated. On a tour of the facility I asked why there was so much sand being put down and where the loam or topsil was. They put down atleast 8" of a 80% sand and 20% seed mix...and no loam or soil! Pretty sure it was rolled out. They were planting bent grass (tee boxes, fairways, greens) and bluegrass on the first cut. True they have drainage and irrigation, but I was surprised they were using a mix with primarily sand.

Hi jrock, I see you are in Northwest Iowa. Are you close to Sioux City or Sioux Falls. Always love to hear from someone in my area since it seems more gardening folks are from the warmer zones who write. I had two brugs about the same size as yours which I overwinter in a small green house, but think I totally killed them by spraying them with an insecticidal soap which I use on my many hibiscus to kill the white flies. Have had the hibiscus for over 15 years and though they invite the flies, the soap doesn't seem to affect them. Think my brugs are dead though. Really sad!! Mary

Hi, The seedlings are best grown under ideal conditions for as long as possible. They can tolerate more "natural" conditions including drought, chill, etc., but ideal conditions accelerate growth. As for mature clivias (12+ leavevs produced), holding off on watering and nitrogen during autumn and winter is what many of us tend to do. The nitrogen encourages leaf growth over flowering. We tend to use 0-10-10 (bloom rite)with our last watering(s)in Oct./Nov. The bud then forms with the "chill" and starts developing. About Feb. or so, add nitrogen back in with your usual fertilizer. What exactly are you worried about? Are you worried that the aerobic bacteria you’ve been growing will not survive the winter? It’ll be fine. The colder the microorganisms get the less active they are, and your rate of composting will likely slow way down. But when the winter is over you can return to feeding it (adding components) and it’ll start back up. That said, the bacteria decomposition itself will create heat if you have a sufficient volume of materials. So you can compost through cold weather, but you might need a larger pile to successfully build up heat, and you have to make sure your ratio of components is closer to optimal, with 4 key ingredients being carbon (brown organic materials like sticks, fallen leaves, sawdust, paper products) nitrogen (green organic materials like grass clippings, plant matter, or fruit/vegetable food waste.) water and oxygen.
