Best websites for find deals while building your home?
Comments (24)Online sites we used- Overstock.com IraWoods.com eFaucets.com wayfair.com ebay.com For your toilets, tubs, sinks, faucets, etc. I definitely recommend going to your local kitchen/bath/plumbing showrooms and inquire about what they may have in the back or in a bargain bin. Sometimes you will have to listen to a spiel about the great deals they have out front and ask again about closeouts or things that were ordered wrong, overstocks, etc that they may have in the back before they get the message that you know those pieces exist and you are only interested in those items. We got a top of the line Kohler tub with all the bells and whistles that was a floor model for 10% of retail (yes, 10% so we got a 90% discount). Our kitchen sink was 50% off, our bathroom sinks were purchased for 5-10% of retail (some were 5% and the others were 10%--so a 90-95% discount) & our custom shower fixture setup was 55% off. These deals were all gotten in the showrooms with no haggling at all. The only item that was discounted because it was discontinued was the shower fixture setup, everything else is still current and available today at full retail. Don't forget to check your area Habitat for Humanity Restores too. CEFreeman on the kitchen forums has found some totally awesome deals on brand new current style items in her local store that she posts for everyone to see. Comments (13)We remodeled a kitchen and 2 baths before we moved in. Would we have done a few things differently if we lived in the house first? Maybe or maybe not, but I am so happy not to have lived in the house through the reno that I do not regret my decision. I considered being able to get the work done beforehand a real luxury. It is possible to get an excellent, functional layout without living in the house-- especially if you connect with good professionals to help you. There are plenty of dysfunctional layouts, many even posted here on GW, created by people who have lived in their houses for years. What I would recommend is not rushing into the reno before you are satisfied that you have a good layout and design. Comments (46)You sounded like me when I came home yesterday to find my 6x24 plank wood-look tile had been installed in the bathroom... in the wrong direction. It was just not what I had envisioned or wanted, and I was upset, but no way was I making him take it out. I had gotten it very cheap, job is running behind and I want to be done. Plus, my mistake for not telling the tiler which way. I had just ASSumed it was obvious it should go the other way. Well, not obvious to the tiler (though I wondered why he didn't ask, when there's a 50/50 no turning back issue like that)... but still, he didn't do anything wrong, and even my husband said he liked it the "wrong" way. Still isn't what I wanted, but the tile is gorgeous, and the effect of the color is still the same and I love it, even if I have to accept it as different from my vision. In your case, mistake = beautiful, so once your mind accepts that, you'll be good to do. :)...See MoreKeeping floors clean after installation while finishing home building
Comments (24)Cover if with thick paper like Recommended by others and taking lots of pictures. Our stupid contractors did the same -but I guess it was our fault for not putting our foot down and telling him no. He was being kinda of aggressive and we were like - ok whatever - would be nice to have floors even if contractor told us that would be last! Learned our lesson. They didn’t do the best at covering and we had several big scratches on our new wood floors. After they pulled paper up we noticed more things but i do not know if that was there before or not. So taking pictures is a great idea. We did have our cabinets installed before the floors but some do have cabinets installed on top of cabinets from what i ha w learned. Our floors looks ok in the places where they covered with some thick brown paper. They doubled up on it . But i. The areas where they used thinner brown paper is where we have the problems Make sure it’s covered !! Our contractors workers started walking and Working on our newly installed floors!!! I could not believe it. They installed floors and didn’t even cover them!!!...See MoreTyagi83
