Bosch Side opening or drop down oven door installed under counter?

I am looking to place my order for a single wall oven that will be installed under a Bosch 36" flex induction cooktop. I know they are very low.. Do you think it would be better to go with the side swing door in this type of installation? If I go with the side opening door I need to get the benchmark $$$ if I do the drop down door I can go with the 800 Series $$. What do you think. Cross Posted to the appliance forum.

If it's going under the induction cooktop, I would go with the drop down. It's the layout I have now and I think a side swing one would be more of a hinderance. Now having said that, we're building a new home and I am probably going with the side swing one because I'm planning on putting my oven higher up this time.

I already have one single wall oven GE profile in a oven cabinet that is only about 5 years old. I could move that oven under the counter & put the side swing in the oven cabinet. That would allow me to install my warming drawer directly under that oven. I don't think it would be so bad being a little higher with the side swing door.

The condense button floods the oven with cold water which disposes of some of the steam prior to opening the door. But, even with this process a lot of stem escapes out of the top of the oven when you open the door. I would not even consider mounting this oven low. My husband opens the door without condensing and the steam that escapes from the top is immense. I would hate to think about what that might do to a face.

I am WAY behind on this conversation but it's relevant to me now so I'm hoping maybe some of you can comment on how this has worked out for you. We purchased the Electrolux ICON microwave a couple years ago for our kitchen remodel. We had planned for it to go under counter. Installation day came and the installer saw the 36" above ground spec and even though could not come up with any reason as to why did not feel comfortable installing. So, we ended up getting a Sharp microwave drawer instead which was fine but I had really wanted the "2nd oven" since we were taking out wall ovens and replacing with a single stand alone range. Anyway, we were unable to return the ICON which was a pretty painful mistake at $1600+ !! I've tried to sell it on OfferUp, NextDoor but no luck. Now we are in a different house and undertaking another complete kitchen remodel. We made plans to install another microwave drawer in the island but we've discussed the situation of the Electrolux to see if there's any way we can use it instead. It's still in the box on the pallet it arrived on. Our kitchen designer and installers could not figure it out either and the designer even called Electrolux and the person he spoke to couldn't figure it out and said they didn't see any problem with it but that it wouldn't be covered under warranty if we installed it there. I'm not thinking this is a big deal because we're already out of the warranty period anyway. I just called Electrolux myself to see if I got the same answer. She didn't say anything about the warranty but said that it was an ergonomic or burn issue. Personally, I don't see how bending down to get something out of the microwave at this height is any different to getting something out of a regular oven (which is actually even lower and deeper!). I looked into installing a single wall oven under an induction cooktop (I ended up getting an induction slide-in range though). What was interesting was that most induction brands allowed it IF the wall oven was the same brand as the cooktop. This included Kitchenaid - don't know where you got your information, but the installation instructions do allow for it with certain ovens - it turns out it is the Kitchen Aid single ovens. Two brands did not allow for a single oven under the cooktop even with their own brands (well, it voided the warranty so the same thing): Bosch and Thermador. No problem with Jennair, Kitchenaid, GE, Electrolux, and Frigidaire. I think Whirlpool also didn't allow it, but I wasn't considering that brand. Don't worry about the venting. There is some venting in all ovens - whether built in wall ovens or ranges. The vents aren't any more hot for a wall oven than a regular range. The reason I chose a slide-in induction range had nothing to do with the height of the oven. The wall oven under the cooktop would have been about the same height as a range's oven. Rather, I really liked the Kitchenaid induction with its (albeit small) second baking drawer. I cook a lot and could see using this. Plus, the cost was much less for a slide-in than a separate cooktop and wall oven. Our house is being remodeled and we haven't even been able to move in yet - so I haven't used it. I hope I love it. It does look nice.

I think the higher the oven is installed, the better it would be to have a side-swinging door. I have a Bosch induction cooktop with a Fagor oven underneath -- dropdown door -- and it's no problem at all for me. I don't think the side-swing would be incrementally better at that height.

Just make sure you have the room to put the GE under the cooktop. Not all ovens can fit under all cooktops or so I was led to believe. :) Otherwise, I think that's an excellent solution. Oh and please let me know how you like the Bosch swing arm once you've been using it a while.

I have my GE oven manual I will pull that out tonight & see. If it is doable I think it may be the perfect solution

Make sure the controls are at the top in any side swing oven door that is under counter.

Scrappy, the door is configured so it can be left opened, right opened or top opened and the controls like on most ovens are at the top.

that's great. I only know the old side opening Gaggenaus that have bottom controls.

You are thinking of the steam oven. The regular convection oven has top control from Gaggenau.

My concern with side doors is that my arm/elbow might accidentally touch the inside of a very hot door. In my case the door will only open 90 degrees, so in my design I think it is more dangerous.

The pull down door never moves and I am used to it.

Anyone have issue with side opening and getting hurt?
