You could use the same type to graft onto. With avocadoes a specific rootstock seems to be less important for a homeowner who is grafting a few things here and there. I have seen at a commercial nursery where they get hundreds of the same variety every year because that seed produces a rootstock that does very well in South Florida. The information you found regarding certain rootstocks that are better is not wrong it just applies more to a nursery or orchard and less to hobbyists.

Thank you Citrus Sages, Very informative as usual. One shoot hasn't amounted to much but the second one is growing quite well but I will take both off close to the graft point to keep the tree from being bushy. I am worried about the bud union not being healthy. I can ask the nursery the graft stock variety their variegated lemons are grafted on. Do you think the bud union is unusual because of the two shoots forming there? A side question, Should I cover the roots coming out of the rootstock with soil or compost?

Sorry to say, mine is dead and is now a stand for dragonfruit. It was a 40 foot tree at one time. Hurricane Andrew wrecked the tree the first time, but it recovered. I put the grafts on after the tree was hacked back after the storm. Then Hurricane Wilma hit it with the knock out punch. It never recovered after that although it tried by spouting from the original rootstock. The avocado tree was on the property when I bought it...one of the few trees that pre-dated me. It was probably planted out in the late 1970's. I had put Lula, Pollack, Loretta, Simmonds, Monroe, and one of the Towers....can't remember which now. All fruited eventually, but even on a large tree it was diffcult to manage and not allow one to over grow the other cultivar. Harry

F...you have covered a lot of ground....and of course you will obtain some random and diverse comments from others. I have 20 avocado trees with 16 varieties...so I know a little bit on the subject. First concern: Talk to me about the "termite damage". I doubt if they are termites. You may not be aware that there is an outbreak of borers that have invaded the avocado industry. Google that. If your tree or branches are damaged to the point of unstable...that must be addressed with pruning or elimination. Item two: What is with the "rootstock side"? Was this tree not a nursery tree that was originally grafted? Ungrafted avo trees are almost always a waste of time. Grafting is done to clone the scion to the "mother tree". Ungrafted trees have a 99% chance of producing inferior trees/fruit. I see no problem pruning that tree if the branches left behind are stable/safe. That is your biggest concern. If you want to do some grafting (this Spring)...why not obtain another variety to add to that tree?
