Lady Hillingdon is dead. Long live Lady Hillingdon
Comments (15)This has been quite the winter.I think that our schools have had more weather-related days off than any time in the 20+ yrs. we've lived here. Sadly, some of our single digit temps occurred without snow cover. Fortunately, there was snow cover when we were below zero and it warmed up before too long. If that's not enough, we are due another arctic blast midweek along with possible snow. March really will come in like a lion this year. I will have to check my Lady Hillingdon again but she seemed OK last month. Mrs. Dudley Cross seems OK, too. Those are my only two teas. They are both older roses so I hope that they made it. I think that I've lost several roses: modern shrubs, a floribunda and maybe some mini's. Since almost everything is own root, I'll wait and see if some of them will come back. This might not really ease the pain of losing roses, but this year my crocus seiberi 'Firefly' are blooming bigger, brighter and fuller than they ever have. They are my special favorites, even though I find that they tend to die off after awhile and I need to replant them every several years. A lot of my old-fashioned daffodils are up with buds, even the ones I should have divided last year because they were too crowded and weren't blooming. My Lenten roses are covered with buds, too. Maybe it will be a beautiful spring. Let's hope!...See MoreMunstead Wood/Lady Shallot/Lady Emma Hamilton/orPrincess Anne
Comments (9)I am near you - about 3 hours from Galveston in east Texas. I love my Tess. I have her on a huge fan shaped trellis - she has very healthy foliage and lots of nice blooms. Two of my favorite Austins are Carding Mill and Abe Darby. Wollerton Old Hall, new for me last year, does get really big, don't find the blooms fragrant like Austin says, but they are pretty. Sophy's Rose is a really good one - healthy foliage, lots of big pretty deep pink blooms. Bishop's Castle is good. Lady of Shallot looks to be big. I have quite a few new ones that are healthy and growing - they will do better next year. Great big for me are James Galway and Scepter d'Isle - like them a lot. I have Lady Emma and Munstead Wood planted where they get full sun until 2pm - hope they like it there. I really like Ambridge Rose too. Love the blooms on Jude......mine is very small though. I am getting another Young Lycadis - my chickens were scratching in that bed and killed it. The color is a different, brighter looking pink that I really like. Englands Rose was new for me last year - it started off looking and blooming fantastically.....then it starting dawdling around. Am hoping it will get going again in the spring - it was really nice. I want to try Princess Alexandra of Kent - have heard good things about it. Do any of you all plan to try the new Austins? I want Boscobel, The Lark Ascending.......not sure about the others. caldonbeck, the photos are fabulous! Judith...See MoreAmerican Lady or Painted Lady?
Comments (5)Sherry, thank you so much for the ID and for the explanation of how you determine the difference. I didn't locate a photo of the wing underside and the photos of the top side of both Ladies looked very similiar to me. I agree, the underside is so colorful and different. I could hardly believe the difference when it spread its little wings and I could see the back. Going to go and correctly tag the photos right now. And thank you for the nice compliments on the photos. A picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words, especially when you're trying to ID these little guys. Got my two Passi incarnata vines planted out yesterday and hope to see a gulf frit one day, too. I planted them in a big pot and am using a wooden teepee trellis over the pot. I've never seen this vine grow so don't know if it will be enough trellis but time will tell. My garden is small and I didn't want to have it coming up in unusual spots! Hopefully, the vine roots are hardy enough that it can overwinter in the pot. Are you guys getting some of this very hot weather? Heat index here today is supposed to be between 105-110. Comments (20)R, I can't tell you whether or not this will be a success, but last month dug out a specimen of LEH that was staying very small planted out in my front garden and potted her up to put by my front door. I'm not sure whether or not she will respond well to this treatment, but since she has been a compact grower for me and is also reported by Austin to be suitable for pots, I suspect she will do well. Great fragrance. Sean, I also love Gertrude Jekyll and Munstead Wood! Such great roses!...See More- 11 years ago
