Please tell me my Marie Van Houtte is okay?!

Hi All,

I planted some teas for the first time last year, this garden is at
the bottom of a deep slope, so when it rains water heads in its
direction, but it gets sun all day long. I am cleaning this garden up
today, so there is no mulch at the moment, but there will be pine mulch
there again by the end of the day. My Marie Van Houtte only has two
large canes, and on both canes there is a large red blotch in the middle
of healthy green cane. I'm concerned this may be the start of canker,
and I don't know if I should remove them for the health of the rose,
(which I'm hoping you say no!), or am I worrying needlessly? These are
the only two old canes for this rose as well, all new canes are just
coming up this year. I have read repeatedly teas hate being pruned, so
to take both canes off due to disease if this is the case could kill the
plant, am I right? Thank you, --Marcia
