Comments (2)Scarlet elder (Sambucus pubens) is native here (is it in >yourAlso check out some native Viburnum species that do thrive well in part shade (V. alnifolia or lantanoïdes, V. cassinoïdes or V. lentago), to get better bird species variety and different crop periods....See MoreShowiest rose for Z4a
Comments (17)The roses I recommended get no winter protection. Linda Campbell (in her first year) does not seem to mind the salt from the road. She's a rugosa hybrid and rugosas can handle the salt so I'm guessing in the long run she'll be just fine. As far as most beautiful low maintenance rose that meets all your criteria above I'd have to suggest (sorry, I couldn't just pick one!!!!!): Quietness (some dieback) Carefree Beauty (some dieback) Aunt Honey (some dieback, lightly fragrant) Stanwell Perpetual (a little dieback, decent repeat bloom, fragrant, one of my first roses to bloom in the spring) Hansa (very hardy, very fragrant, large shrub, rugosa) Since the once blooming old roses are some of my favorites I have to add Charles de Mills. And I still highly recommend Konigin von Danemark.. Charles The little dieback part is hard to come across unless you are getting Canadian roses, and even some of them dieback for me. As a group the majority of rugosa roses will give you hardiness, disease resistance, repeat bloom, and fragrance but they are not the showiest of roses.....See MoreClematis for z4
Comments (15)Great to know others of the fancies are doing well in z4. I am planning to add E Violette (my E Rose is going very well). I opted for Clare deLune over Huldine because I loved the ripply edges of CdL's petals, but will definitely keep Huldine in mind. Betty Corning is on my wish list too. Just not available for now. Then again, I gotta save something to get next summer! LOL TJ, so great to see another 'Treasure Stater' here. I love the look of Little Duckling (also called Piilu). I have high hopes for mine!...See MoreNeed suggestions for z4 Shade Shrub/Bush
Comments (3)Virginia creeper can get huge & is very vigorous, you probably want something more manageable. I don't know anything about Boston Ivy. For a shrub, the Carolina Allspice (Calycanthus floridus) is nice. I also like Cornus alternifolia, the native pagoda dogwood. It has a great winter outline & decent fall color....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
