I love these smaller white Corelle bowls. I also have certain glasses that I use depending on what beverage I am drinking. I am pretty picky.

What kind of bowls do you use now that you like, are they glass, plastic, ceramic, metal? And what colors?

Absolutely! It's more important with small amounts. Pasta goes in a rimmed soup, always. Soup might be in a rimmed soup or cereal bowl depending on quantity and circumstances. I have these great soup and sandwich plates but the bowls are very big so not really great for soup and sandwich! Good for soup and a couple of crackers and crudites, though. Frozen desserts are fine in simple Pyrex custard cups, but I have some shallow kids' rice bowls that are good for pretty little scoops, and tall wabi sabi cups that are better for things with toppings, and gorgeous floral ramekins that are perfect for anything small but hidden from kitchen marauders because they're delicate and irreplaceable. Double ramekins are especially useful for small servings of beans or pasta. And, of course, cereal has to be in just the right cereal bowl.

I bought my fill-in cereal bowls (since my regular dishes only have the rimmed soups) a very long time ago, but they came from Pier One, who had a great variety of shapes and sizes in pretty designs.

I fell in love with these because they're so colourful. Bought them at Value Village and they're our go-to cereal bowls.

Stacey, I'm curious; how can the bowls wear out?

I have many different sets/collections of plates and bowls and I definitely use them for specific foods -- but it's not just about function, it's also about making the food look appealing! For example, I use my Chinese set for Chinese/Thai food and always use pure white when I serve German food. I make a lot of soup in the winter and have certain bowls that I use for just about every different type of soup. lol! I guess I have a little bit of a 'dish' fetish. :O)

My favorite bowls for oatmeal came from a dollar store. They're large and green and make many foods look very appetizing to me. I have four and wanted more, but could only get them in red. The only thing that looks good to me in the red bowls is cat food. The girls love those bowls. :O)

I like a small diameter, deep bowl for any hot food. My tea stays hot longer in a tall, narrow mug. A scoop of ice cream looks right to me in a small ramekin or custard cup. Yes to spaghetti in a wide dish; you need to have room along the edge to 'twirl' your fork.

Thank you, everyone for your comments. Jasdip - that's such a pretty bowl! Maybe I'll look at Value Village to see what I might find there. This is one of the bowls I'm looking to replace. Maxmom - I noticed that the bottom of the bowls appeared to be stained. I tried to scrub them, then realized that the glaze is wearing off from age and the orange clay showing through is what I thought was a stain. The bowls are earthenware, probably only lightly glazed, are 5 1/2 inches in diameter and hold about 2 cups. They are shallow and have a flat bottom which I really like.

I like cereal in a deep bowl, so the limpness, more necessary when one lacks teeth, engendered by the milk only hits part of it at a time, but it is a bit difficult to get the soggied stuff out from the bottom without having too much of the fresh stuff fall down into the milk before I'd planned, to get super-soggy.

As I often heat soup in a microwave and the goods boil at the edge in a shallow, sloping-edged bowl ... but is still cold in the middle: no, thanks!

I have some old ceramic ones that last forever, so am not counting on needing to replace them for a while.

Do I have favorite bowls. Ha-ha. If you only knew. I used to collect bowls. I have yellow ware, old restaurant/dinner bowl, pyrex, and many various vintage bowls. I don't eat cereal (mainly because I don't drink milk) but my favorite bowls for something like ice cream, would be one of the old restaurant bowls...or one of the Hull bowls that have a handle. They are brown with a drip glaze. The restaurant bowls are mostly white with blue or green rings. Some are tan with a dark orange ring around them. I just like the feel of an older, heavier bowl. I remember a time when my daughter was baking a cake and I told her, "Be careful with that....it is my "pet" bowl." She said, "they are all your pet bowls".....and yes, she was right.

I also have favorite flatware...stainless knives and forks. I like (again) the older ones that have a little heft to them, and I like a long tine on the forks. My favorite set is one that came from Germany, via my sister in law, who gave them to my mother, who passed them on to me.

All of my dishes, cookware, utensils and flatware are older. I think they were better made and they have a better feel in my hands. The one thing that I cannot resist buying when I go to a thrift shop, yard sale or flea market is the older cooking utensils. I prefer the ones with bakelite or plastic handles, over the ones with wood, although I have plenty of those too. They are stainless, whereas some of the old ones with wooden handles are chromed and over time, many you find are rusting or have the chrome peeling off.

I like old flatware too, Marilyn, and have one fork that is the sole survivor from a set I purchased more than 50 years ago. I use the fork when I need to blend pastry or a similar task because it's so sturdy and doesn't bend. Don't ask me how many times I have bent my newer spoons from trying to dig ice cream out of a carton!

I have some really pretty cobalt blue ceramic bowls I bought recently for soups and chili. Some have a small handle on each side and some have a longer knob type handle on one side. I like the single knob kind for chili and the others for soup. I like having handles.

I see your favorite bowl also has the 2 little handles stacey. I got mine at what used to be garden Ridge but has now changed names to At Home.

This is the bowl I use for soup, it's from Epicure. I love them! I have 8 so I can use them for company too, but I use them every time I have soup. For cereal I just use the bowls that came with my dishes.

Raven - your cobalt blue bowls sound lovely! We don't have At Home stores here, unfortunately. Casey - that bowl looks like it might work for my cereal. I'm going to go to their web site and check details.

That bowl looks very much like my blue bowls with the handles. The other ones are like the kind you see often with French Onion soup in them.

Raven - those bowls are cute and I'm looking for those that stack well. I'm also going to keep a look out for colored bowls (I love color) like the cobalt blue that you described. Vesselarian - LOL! I'm reading a book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up : the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing that I might review on a future Book of the Week. Perhaps after I read it, I will be a vesselarian no more!

LOL! You can be a vesselarian with only a few well chosen vessels, too. They just have to be good (personal value, not dollar) ones. :)

Mine are somewhat like casey's picture, large cups with handles, easy to hold.

dh uses the corelle regular set ones. but for soup and chili and I only have 4 left, are ones from a cheapie store in ca, that are more like stoneware (thicker)...but for my oatmeal I reuse the plastic ones from the "diet" meals as they heat the cereal in 40 secs....I used to have a set with the side handles for soup but they're long gone. and for just the 2 of us, don't need anymore...
