got a new computer.... have some questions...
Comments (5)Give me your old computer, or give it to someone you trust , i wouldnt risk giving a hard drive to the trash without a hammer. I have been using Avast on Vista laptop here as it seems to be the most popular right now... but that could change fast with a new version. Unless you live in a multifamily building its seriously doubtful anyone will want to steal your wifi connection and the connections with your bank and such will be highly encrypted,, no one will be cracking into that quickly in the short amount of time you're going to be using it. Follow proper security recomendations and you'll be fine. New solo browser window for your banking or other secure financials... highly recommended if you have wifi or cable network of any kind ;) And close it and clear cache when youre done,,, unless youre positive all youre sharing is blocked. Public hotspots ,,, Vista has a special public place security feature you can use... great for single stand alone non networked computers in the home too. Wifi is cool and 'nearly' totally secure - it would be unusual for someone to gain access to yours unless you have a crook for a neighbor or a stupid kid. ,, im fixing to unsecure mine now for a few days... if I see someone using it ,, I'll block them if its not one of my freindly neighbors accidentally connected. Not a big deal to me if I know the user. But easily secured so youre the only one that has access without some hacking. Hacking into wifi is a serious crime in most communities. my two pennies anyways.... if you dont have wifi now call your isp before running out and buying something,, they maybe will sell you something cheap,, or give it to you and then support it too if you need help setting it up....See MoreComputer Security for Dummies
Comments (9)if you want help from us then and then won't do what tasks are asked then there is no way we can help you. WE could send you to one of the support forums specific for clean up but you must run the scans and tasks that are asked for us to see what is on the machine if we don't know then there is no way to help clean it. If zep is asking you to run something you can rest assured it is NOT something to hurt you it is to see what you have lurking on the pc. There is a difference between antivirus programs and all the other things you mentioned. You can only have one Antivirus program running at a time you have MSE that is fine. You can have several other anti malware programs on the pc because they do not run till you start them up and run a scan you only do one at a time. Malwarebytes is great be sure you update it prior to running the full scan weekly, another is superantispyware also update prior to running full scan. The other thing you should have is spywareblaster you just open it weekly and hit the update button then hit enable all protection so the shield turns green that is it it sits there and does it's thing. I would also suggest putting WOT on your browsers so you are warned if a site has a bad reputation or is dangerous. Use this tool regularly to check for updates to other things on your pc , the majority of infections today are happening because of not updating your flash, java, adobe etc programs they must be updated and so must windows so do all those updates. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) run online virus scans occasionally to see if they find something your MSE missed ESETs Free Online Scanner You want to quarantine because if it happens to be something that was needed then you can go back and get it, when they are in quarantine you need not worry about them just leave them alone. If you would feel better going to a support forum for help in examining what you are dealing with here is the link, you will need to register there and post your question in this forum area. I am there also if you need help let me know. Analysis and Malware Removal If you read through some of the posts there you will see how many people are helped and are thankful for that kind of free assistance....See MoreOff line computer--turn off security
Comments (2)You might be able to go to Control Panel/Security Center/under Resources in the left hand column/Change the way Security Center alerts me/uncheck Virus Protection - Alert me if my computer might be at risk because of my virus protection software settings. This may turn off the popup, but not the antivirus software. Probably need to know which AV you use to know how to turn it off....See MoreInternet Security Question
Comments (11)My XP laptop used microsofts OneCare for two years and it was by far the most simple no brainer Firewall, Anti-Virus, active spyware. It's a $50 annual subscription or online can be found for about half that. I fiddled with the bunch of freewares and probably installed/uninstalled or tried all of the more popular ones. Myself and the xp laptop are now believers in simple fully functional stuff... that you dont have to fiddle with; AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender anti-spyware & maybe not for everybody, the old Sygate Personal Firewall. Which you have to search for probably at download.com . It was bought by one of the biggies but the old freeware version is still popular and quite a decent firewall....See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
