Help! two story family room needs painting
Comments (7)Hope my response is not too late to be useful. Before I begin though, a few questions. Are you painting the ceiling too? How high - 17' for more? Flat or cathedral? Graywings' has provided a very helpful list. To it, I suggest a few additional items: A wide blade knive to scrape all the "pimples" from the existing surface. This will minimize the potential for runs in the new paint. A 5 in 1 painters tool to remove the compound from nail pops. Also a screwdriver and/or punch and hammer to tighten the screws or reset any nails. A small container of compound to refill the nail pops. Some drywall tape should it be necessary to replace any that has "popped". Sandpaper to feather any fill areas into the wall surface. A quality sponge to wipe all surfaces dust-free before painting. Possibly caulk and a caulking gun. Use paintable caulk! Visit your local rental agent for tools to assist. They have a variety of items for DIY'ers. Personally I don't like resting an extension ladder against my walls so a Little Giant type ladder (basically an adjustable 2-sided step ladder) will enable you to reach high and adjust to work on stairs too. Or, rent scaffolding - especially useful for cutting-in at the ceiling. Be Safe! TIME! It took me a week to redecorate our entry. The final look will only be as good as the preparation beneath. My painting sequence (following preparation) is ceiling, then trim, then walls. After painting the trim and allowing a day or more for curing, I apply the delicate blue tape to create the clean edge for the wall color on the top edge of baseboard and against the door/window trim. Use an almost dry brush and paint against the tape for the first coat to dry and seal the tape edge and prevent bleeding underneath. Hope this helps. Comments (12)Sorry, I have to disagree with the others and say it's definitely permissible to hang the chandelier where you propose. No one is going to see the chain through the window, and the light should be down where the people are so it can give light to them. Well, I love two-story chandeliers and I LOVE palladian windows more than I can say. And I love big Williamsburg brass chandeliers. I have all three in this house, LOL, and my chandelier is hanging with the tip of its bottom about 8.5' off the floor. The chain is not visible through the window. Two decorators and a very smart lighting store owner have told me this is permissible, so I'm sticking with it. You mention getting a small fixture. How small? You want to make sure it's not too tiny for the space it will be filling. Now that would be bad! LOL. Light store lady and decorator #1 once told me the formula for size vs. space, but I do not remember, sorry....See Moretwo-story foyer, need help choosing white paint for judges panel

Comments (14)Anj_p - thank you for your detailed notes. BR 1 is tiny. Those are bifolds in the closet door to maximize the usability of a reach-in closet. BR 2 is an odd shape, agreed. Originally the architect had the closet on the wall that is shared with the bathroom. I had them move it because there wasn’t enough clearance any where you put the bed (including this note in case you think that was a better placement). I’m a fanatic about symmetry though, and once we moved the closet, it meant the windows were off-centered which is why I had them put built-ins in the jut-out to balance the room. The windows are 4 ft windows though, so I don’t think a bed will block the light... but maybe I’m wrong. BR 3 will have a built-in in the weird corner - I should have noted that in the plans. Master - I agree on the walk. I plan to have another child in this house and I cannot fathom doing this walk 47x in the middle of the night. However, my husband gets up very early (~4:30 am) and says he would like to use the shower in the morning without fear of waking me... Additionally, the kitchen is right below the master bath right now so I think this placement was chosen for easy plumbing. I had tried to swing the master around - put the WIC where the hall bath is and then shift the Master Bath to where all the closets are and my husband hated it... That being said, I wanted to come here to see if a lot of other people share this opinion. I think right now he is comparing my thoughts (novice, never built a home) to those of a professional architect and builder and thinking there is no way I can come up with a preferable layout. He might be right, but I figured it’s definitely worth checking! Thank you for all the other notes as well. I will keep this all in mind....See Moreal dorane
