Base measurement first, then build intruding walls

Just in case I don't know what I don't know: is there any problem with defining the space of your shower then ripping down the existing drywall and building a wall out from the existing wall? For example, you have a 6x6 room. You put the shower in a corner and measure it out at 4x4. On one wall you want to build out a perpendicular wall, thus providing a new wall for the shower area. Let's say that the studs are separated such that there is no stud abutting where the new wall would be. You simply take a 2x4 and add a stud to wherever it needs to go, and then screw the new wall frame into the plywood and stud? Almost seems too simple which makes me think this is not the correct way to go about it.
