Generally, I'm a fan of the "If you use different cabinets, stick with the same counter for continuity" camp. However, given you are basically taking the island color to the perimeter, and the perimeter color to the island, I think you are safe in terms of it looking integrated and pulled together whatever way you go.

Do you prefer white cabinets with black counters or with marble? Is there any chance that the marble won't play nice directly on top of Dover White? Black seems safer in that regard, as the challenge with white cabinets and white counter is always about making sure the tones match and compliment each other well.

I'm not sure, but it seems like a black hood and black counters might start being a lot of black.

My vote is for all marble to unify. I don't like that reverse look: dark island with light counter and light perimeter with dark counter.

Could you wait to decide on the hood cover? Get all the cabinets in and then prime your cover in white to see if you like it white. Or cover with black trash bag to try that out.

I would do black granite on the white and keep the hood white as well. Cuz, that's exactly what I am doing in my new build too...ha! :)

My vote is marble on all and a black hood!

I have Dover White cabs on order and I got a sample of Viatera Minuet marble-look thinking it would look good with the Dover. It's OK, but I love the contrast of the dark soapstone samples I got. I do love light counters with white, so if your samples looks good with the Dover, I think it would be pretty either way. If you do the lighter counter, the black hood would tie-in to the island color.

My hubby is building my range hood as well (a little scary!), so I can't wait to see your kitchen completed!

What are you planning for the backsplash? I think either would work and look beautiful. If you did the black granite, you could tie it back to the marble countertop by doing a marble backsplash. I would stick with a honed finish if that is what you are using for the marble. I also think either hood color will work.

Another vote for marble on all, to keep things light and the black hood to tie into the island cabinets.

I think it all sounds pretty. either all Marble or marble with Black paremeters. I would definitely go for white hood not black, (not to crazy about that black hood being so noticeably and standing out) .But as nancyjwb said, try first with white.

My range is the focal point. It's 48" capital Culinarean. It was our big splurge. I am thinking marble for the bs but I guess I'll have to see if it will go with the Dover white.

As for the hood, it depends -- what are you planning to do with the ceiling beams? I would worry that a black hood might just be too much of a big black hole in your kitchen, since you don't have all those windows like the kitchen in your example photo.

i would use honed AB granite on perimeter.
honed marble on island, i would like both to be the same finish.
white hood for cohesion, i don't think i would like a black blob in the middle of white cabs, it's just not a look i like, too much visual clutter.
add a "pop" with the BS, paint or accessories..

steph2000 has a good point about the whites matching, that's def. has to been considered...

I would be concerned about doing a black painted hood. We have a lot of painted black furniture and it's a bear to keep dust-free. It's a different case with your island which will mostly be vertical planes. But when I looked at the pic of the black hood you posted my first thought was what a focal point it would be and how hard to keep a veil of dust from settling on it.

Re: your countertops, I like marble on the black island & black on the white cabinets. Your kitchen seems large enough to me for you to mix counter materials.

Sounds really pretty! Do you want your decision to be based entirely on aesthetics or does function come in to play? Both options sound very pretty, but as someone who LOVES marble (so I'm not one to complain about etches or anything) I would want something more durable right next to my range. I am doing white cabinets with marble on my island and soapstone on my work wall (range and sink wall) so I would probably be inclined to go with the honed absolute black for function. Both will look great, though!

I think you guys nailed it. I will go with marble on the island and black on the counter by the range. Both honed. I also think the hood should be dover white.

Now to figure out bs. I wanted to do marble but worry it may be too white gray to look right next to the cabs. Perhaps a simple subway tile that matches the dover white.

The black hood you posted is an attention-grabber, IMO, and not in a good way. If you want the range to be the focal point, keep the hood white.

i love the idea of marble BS...try to get some samples when all is in place and go from there...herringbone pattern would look fab, or maybe herringbone just over cooktop to give u that "pop".
i don't think i would try to match the DW, simply bc if u fail it will look "off"... if u want to keep it simple, how about a light to med. gray subway??

They are already accessible beige by Sw. The other side of the room is all windows and a patio door. The color on that wall is brainstorm bronze. My island is around 13 or 14 ft. The other side will have a long dining table with a colorful rug underneath. I'm trying to think what to put on the perpendicular wall to the white cabs. It's a huge blank wall. It leads to a hallway where there are nothing but windows and on that same side of the bare wall there are three spotlights for an art wall. You can see that wall from our large patio.

I imagine that is all very confusing!

I would hold off on that wall til you get everything else in there. Then live with it awhile and it will come to you what should live there.

Good point. My walls will be bare for a while, as I have some art that I really like but need a lot more!
