Are bedspreads a thing of the past. A RANT!

Is it possible to buy a spread that fits on these now thicker mattresses? I have a full size bed and the size spread needed on it is a queen so it will drop close to the floor. That doesn't solve the problem because even in the queen size, the length isn't long enough to cover the pillows as a traditional spread should. The drop to the floor is 24 inches. The frame is just 6 inches high, so it is the thickness of the mattress and box that make it a problem.

I don't want a bulky quilt or comforter and shams and/or a dust ruffle which is the only option I am finding. I would like a nice lightweight plisse, seersucker or even a ribcord would do. It would be easy to make one that would fit with a flat top designed with a gathered skirt for the drop to the floor. Apparently manufacturers would rather have us spend the bucks for all the pieces that go into outfitting a bed with comforters, bed skirts, etc.

Houzz doesn't even have a listing for 'spreads' in its Bedroom site.

Brylane Home has lots of pretty spreads, reasonably priced. I bought one that is plenty long enough to touch the floor. Queen size. They do send lots of catalogs!

I agree. I hate the fussiness of all these 'pieces' on a bed. The only solution I found was to have a bedspread made to order -- and I haven't felt like spending $300-$400 for a king size one!

It is very frustrating, I prefer not to have comforted, dust ruffle etc. I have a bedspread on my bed but it was hard to find. I got mine from a site called Domestications, no longer in business. The same spread was on Amazon. Touch of Class has some bedspreads, http://www.touchofclass.com/bedspreads/c/20502/pgnum/2/

I like tailored bedspreads, not all the ruffle-y stuff around the edges. But I have yet to find one with a nice pattern that's not silky and quilted and $500. haha

This is mine, it's getting a little worn, I am always looking......

I'm in agreement with much of the above. And will add that many responders on the forums state what works for them as universal truth for all gardeners. Micro-climates and soil conditions are just two of the many variables. To my mind, I've found buying plant material recommended for my zone 4 (and I'm finding more and more plants that have been bred and grown in my zone and not trucked in from California and Florida, etc. which also attests to their probability of surviving my gardens and all their micro-climates) has proven much more successful than trying to get a zone 5 plant to thrive even with much special attention. To be honest, trial and error in your own garden is a better guage then even asking other local gardeners. And it's simply because their conditions aren't exactly the same as yours. Having someone say "If I can grow it, anybody can" couldn't be farther from the truth... which is why I've totally given up on coreopsis, Monarda, Becky shasta daisies, Dutch Iris, and the new and improved heuchera varieties. I've had the old heucheras since they were simply called Coral Bells and they perform like troopers, but the new varieties just won't survive for me. I could zone push and put in a much lusted after Japanese Maple - but my gardening sense tells me not to set myself up for disappointment. Yes, the zone hardiness maps are only guidelines, and they don't tell you the whole story. I've been gardening for many years and trial and error (even for what is rated as zone appropriate) is still a real good teaching tool.

Cynic, is that all???? I better get moving. LOL Maybe I will surprise my family and leave them to fend for themselves and take that trip to England for Christmas. I'll let them have my house and they can do their own cooking. Fat chance, they would starve. I think Laura's boyfriend knows how to cook though and my brother's specialty is Greek pasta salad. My sister is the Queen on Lean Cuisine. LOLOL Not exactly a nice Christmas dinner is it. Okay I have been reprieved, a ton of weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I just called my brother and he and his girlfriend are driving to Toronto for Thanksgiving. David is still at his store counting stock and will be there pretty much all night since the store just closed. He sounds happy to be retiring but I feel kind of sad for him. End of an era. I then called my friend Kathy to see if she had any bacon on hand and she said she did. I asked her to make me some bacon bits for the broccoli salad but she said not to bother making it since rarely do we have a cold salad at Thanksgiving and then she said I ruined her surprise. Kathy is one of my childhood friends and it has always been the tradition in her family to have that marshmallow 24 hour salad for their holiday dinners. I consider that more a dessert salad but hey who am I to mess with tradition and this is her first Thanksgiving without her Mom so I said that was wonderful she made the salad. I like it but usually at a shower or something like that. I never thought to make what we call my Grandma's green lime jello salad made with pineapple, celery and cream cheese LOLOL At our family dinners there was always that pale green Pyrex casserole dish on the holiday table that held the lime green salad. Refreshing it was and I had forgotten all about it. I will have to remember it for Christmas. Out of all the vintage Pyrex I have in my huge collection that pale green casserole dish is one I have never been able to find at yards sales or thrift shops. I think my sister Lizzie absconded Grandma's green dish so I will have to ask her if she still has it. Lime green cream cheese jello is just not tradition without serving it in that dish. Oh my. I now don't have to put 2 extenders in the table now so I should have a table cloth that will suffice. I know I should do it anyway but now I don't have to make that extra effort to make sure everything in my house is in perfect order and now I can hide books and my computer stuff on the attic stairs and the dog can still have his toys out and the dog food bag can remain where it is. I was getting ready to get on my butt and start cleaning baseboards since the "girlfriend" was coming. Tomorrows Menu Turkey Stuffing Cranberry Sauce Brussel Sprouts sliced cooked with garlic and cream Orange glazed carrots Squash Mashed turnip Mashed potatoes and gravy Tray with raddishes, olives, my pickled beets 24 hour salad Rolls Pumpkin pie Butter tarts - my Mom's filling recipe, Tenderflake shells I will go raid my Pyrex collection for all the autumn coloured pieces and that way I can keep the food warm in the oven and put right on the dinner table to serve. I wouldn't do that with good china which I don't have right now. I'm still waiting for my Grandma's china to make its way back to Windsor - it just needs a ride LOL Grandma's Royal Doulton china and her pale green Pyrex dish now that for a beautiful holiday table. PkPonder, I am usually on the home forums but perhaps some day will finish my bathrooms, doors and windows and get bored over there and spend all my time on the garden side or out in my garden. But I had a similar experience that got ugly -- and then it went public and I got chastised for saying anything because some third parties went and dug around and, after a wrong guess or two, figured out who the other person was -- so it was my fault, according to some, that a third party eventually figured it out, said so and the other person got offended. Whatever. The solution was really simple -- communicate. At least acknowledge a gift received or reply to an eventual inquiry and say things have happened (although the story above with the person moving and just blowing it off is even crazier than the tale I got). I just find it amazing that you only paid $4 for that bad check. With all our booster group and PTA checks, we got hit with $25 to $35 fees -- and we charged them back to the check writer. They'd get hit with a fee by their bank too - that gets really expensive, Glad you weren't out more and you don't have to worry about the karma factor. BTW, do you live in Ponder? I drive through there when I go to visit my son in college.

Hi again aprile, I've been considering your situation some, since reading your original post. You need some emotional space between you. Don't let him pull this passive-aggressive business on you. Don't let him push your buttons. How would he react if you began to rather laugh at these sillinesses? In something of a light-hearted way, not coming across as mean-spirited and bitter. I hope that you can find some ways to resolve some of these issues between you. Do you have some person who cares about you, and is level-headed and sensible, whether professionally trained or not, who can listen and be helpful as you work your way through this troubling situation? Maybe a faith-related person, who'll listen, consider your situation and you and not just offer a bunch of pre-digested nostrums, that are given as the answer to every person's need, regardless of their individual circumstance. I wonder some about your dad inhabiting his own little emotional cubbyhole - is there some way to help him get a larger view of life, and feel more at home in it? Has he dealt with counselling, or would he be amenable to such? Is there someone whom he trusts, to whom he might pay attention, were they to suggest it and encourage him? ole joyful

This is why I've had to have all of our bedding custom made. Store bought stuff has gotten skimpier and skimpier as the years go by to where spreads don't fit right at all.

Boscov's carries lightweight spreads. I have not bought one so Im not sure if they are skimpy or not. Also Kohl's carries some very light "quilted" spreads. Maybe Vermont Country store has something. I bought a lightweight spread at Christmas Tree Shop for really cheap and it fits my queen bed nicely. Good luck. Satine

Gazania, do a Houzz search for "bedspreads" instead of spreads. That should get some results for you. You might also be interested in some of the bedspreads at the kMart website. I found several that look very nice. I also found this one at WalMart that just may have to be shipped to me very soon. :-)

If the size of the spread for a full size bed is the standard 96 wide by 110 long, it does not fit to the floor on a bed with these thicker mattresses. If you go to a queen size, the extra width is close, but there is still not enough length to cover the pillows and have the bottom of the spread go close to the floor.

I had that same rant when I got a new, higher bed. I hate the thicker mattresses, and I had to take the bed off the frame to keep the bed from towering over my old nightstands. Fortunately, I am a quilter, so I made my own bedspread to fit my bed.

When we got our new bed, I asked for the low-profile foundation. It's half the height of a regular, so that the bed is at a normal height. I hate falling out of bed in the morning, with the super high beds.

I don't like duvets and duvet covers. The duvets never fit and always shift around. I got a new comforter and a quilt from Freecycle and we love it. It's perfect.

You can still find the old-fashioned cotton "chenille" bedspreads at Vermont Country Store. (Not an ad or endorsement, just know they have some hard-to-find items).

I have the same problem since I got my new taller mattress, I kept my foundation because it was not as tall. I would have needed a ladder to get in bed, as it is now I can't sit on the edge and touch the floor, that is the one thing I don't like.

I have started getting the beautiful quilted coverlets from steinmart they are reversible, well made and I love the colors and patterns. I keep a solid neutral color bedskirt on all the time so not a lot of things to mess with. For some I have matching shams but not all, I have solid color sheets that coordinate with the colors so I can just have my pillows in the pillow cases sitting on top.

I love matelasse and own several bedspreads of it not all of them touch the floor now but it doesn't bother me I leave the bedskirt on even with the bedspreads. I got one of my favorite bedspreads at Tuesday Morning and it does still go to the floor it's a fantastic spread.

Box springs are now "out of style" and all you need is a mattress. So bedding is going through another change. How about those Euro sized pillows....26" X 26"? :0)

katlan. I get the Touch of Class catalog and looked at the site you posted. The 'Grand" sizing they have, 102 wide x 115 long, for a full would be great. It seems that anything I have any interest in either doesn't come in the 'Grand' size or doesn't come in a color I can use. I really, really don't want quilted and don't care much for chenille. I am being too picky maybe.

ravencajun, like you, I cannot reach the floor with my feet when sitting on the bed. This bed is in the guest bedroom. (just 2 bedrooms in the house). Due to dh's cpap use and my need for pillows around me for support, I am using this bed myself except when we have overnight company. As it is now, it is a little difficult for me to get into and out of the bed due to the height. As my weakness progresses, something will have to change. In the meantime, I sure would like to have a nice summer weight, non fussy bedspread that fits the way it should.

vicsgirl, Vermont Country Store has several of the type of spread I want, but not the oversize I need. I even called them to ask about them.

There sure is a vacuum in the bedding department, isn't there? 10-15 years ago I found an ecru matelasse bedspread at Tuesday morning that fits our cal king bed pretty well. Since I wash it in warm water and dry it in the dryer, it has shrunk a little over the years, but I keep it a little shorter on the side that can't be seen and the length (over the pillows) is still fine. It's a little worse for wear at the edges by now so I'm looking for another, with no luck. I don't care for the fringe which so many of them have.

I did recently buy from Orvis a couple of seersucker spreads for another bedspread. They are ok, but like you said, Gazania, they don't go all the way to the floor. I too don't care for a comforter set because we prefer cotton blankets and don't tuck all the way around the bed. Would you consider ebay or etsy and buy a used one?

Last year I found a beautiful bedspread for my king size bed at Kmart. It fits great too. It's more for winter so I need to stop in there to see what they have in a summer weight.

Some time back, like 'way back, I started a search on the KT for
bedspreads, and finally gave up. So I'm glad to see this come up now and
will check out the sites suggested, starting with online searches. Wish

gazania, it IS frustrating isn't it? The tailored ones that I like all seem to be satin material, or quilted, or both, or just not a pattern I like. I think you should absolutely be picky when you have to look at it every single day. Good luck on your search! You too Sue.

I got mine when Mervyns was going out of business a few years back.Like the op,I had to get a king size to fit my queensize bed,and since my bed is high,it still wasn't wide enough for the drop,but length was fine and does go over the pillows.I make my own dust ruffles,as I don't like the skimpy ones they sell,and they are easy to make.

I don't have pictures on my kindle,or else i'd show you,maybe later today if I remember.

This is of interest to me, what I find is the bedspreads in the links provided look kind of tacky. Not all of them but most of them, IMHO anyway. I for one HATE comforters and I wonder why they ever became so darn popular and when did bed covers shrink or have they just not caught up to the larger mattresses? Sheesh bed cover manufacturers...WAKE UP!!!!! It's not 1970 anymore! smh!

two links work and two do not. Enough to see the bedspread though. I'm pretty sure that the quilt I'm using on my queen bed is a king and is just barely large enough but almost too short for my liking.

I don't think the makers of bedspreas are taking into consideration the depth of the mattressess any more. I have 2 box springs on my bed,and then the mattress as i don't like a low bed.But you're right,the king size on a king bed would be too small,you would need a bed skirt.

I really like these at steinmart, this is the one that is on my rv bed right now and I also have it in hot pink and one in in a beautiful colorful flower print for my master, I like to change up the colors in my room and they are very reasonably priced.

Not for a bedspread in the correct size but it could if you can get bigger size than the bed. I did that for the rv and it is like a bedspread, my bed is a queen size and I am using a king size. I really like them and the weight of them is perfect. They have all the colors in the store. That's why I have several colors the price is great and they put them on sale often. I have washed them and they still look brand new.

ravencajun, what I have on the bed in question now is a queen size throw style ribcord spread. Placed on the bed so that the pillows could be covered (that is what spreads are meant to do) allows the frame at the foot end of the bed to be exposed. Pulling the spread down even with the head of the bed so that the frame is covered at the foot meant that the corners at the foot end of the bed dragged on the floor greatly. I feared tripping over that excess, so I cut those corners off and rounded them to get it off the floor.

Over 10 years, that spread has many pulls in the ribcord and needs replacing. Remember my original post. I don't want bulky, quilted, bed skirts, or shams. Just a nice light weight summer spread that drops at least far enough to cover the rails of the frame and is long enough to cover the pillows and doesn't have to be altered so it doesn't drag on the floor at the foot.

I would make one, but handling large amounts of fabric and working at my sewing machine isn't a doable thing for me anymore.

Thank you to all that have responded trying to help me solve this issue. As Arkansas-girl said... manufacturers need to wake up!

I know exactly what you are looking for, the only place I see them now is brylane home. We used to do the spread over the pillows that way too. I know that is not an option for many now with the tall mattress. As the mattress trend changes so should the bedding but for some reason they don't.

I was responding to Arkansas girl about taking pictures of mine for her since she has no steinmart locally.

Thanks for the offer raven but apparently the only king bedspread they have to order is a turquoise one. Weird that they don't have any kings in stock but just one style!? Not that I don't like turquoise, it just wouldn't match a single thing in my house...HA! :()

I did see some thin bedspreads when I searched at BBB but they sure are pricey. Maybe search at bed bath and beyond and see if you don't care about the price but to me $200 is a lot. You could use the coupon which would help some.

Arkansas girl not sure which page you looked at but on this page with all the ones like mine every one I clicked on was available in king you just have to scroll down the page on that item to find the king selection box. I love the print ones especially that turquoise one with the bold floral print on it. I have been wanting that one and might get it t his summer, great summer colors.

I'll check again because I clicked on "king" to narrow the search and only the one came up. I looked at a few others just to see and they were not available in king so I just gave up and figured the search was accurate.

Edit to update: OK so I did the search again and chose king and got only 4 color choices this time and none of them were turquoise. Apparently their search feature is buggy as all get out because there are lots of kings...gah! Maybe I should contact them about the flaw in their search feature.

I would not use the search feature just go to the various ones you like and click on them each of them has a king option and each one said in stock on the ones I looked at. Those search features at so many sites are terrible.

I found this company with some thin bedspreads at reasonable prices: thin cotton bedspread There are other colors also. This looks closest to what you are searching for. I did an google image search with the word bedspread in quotation marks and found a lot of places selling bedspreads. The quotation marks get rid of all the non-bedspread photos and limit the results to only bedspreads.
