I assume you've opened the email settings on your phone and checked the spelling of your name there?

Yes -- under settings, if you hit mail/contacts/calendars, under Accounts, you should see Gmail (or something --whatever you named it when you set it up) - click on that and you should see Account at the top with your gmail email address showing. Click on the email and you should see your name listed next to "Name" at the top of the screen -- if it is spelled wrong, just touch the name to get the keyboard and fix it.

If it's not spelled wrong then I have no idea.

Gmail is not a fancy email service like Exchange -- it is a simple pop/smtp account. As such, it is basically a repository for your email. You have to set up an account to access the gmail repository on each device separately, and each device lets you enter a "name" which can be anything you want -- so you could change your name to be "Mtn's iphone" for your phone, "Mtn's ipad" for your ipad, or even "Barrack Obama" if you want to freak out your email recipients for a minute. The phone doesn't care what you put in there.

I never understood why people indicate where they are sending emails from eg "sent from my ipad" and such.

Anyway, I had been to the screen you suggested before, and was stymied because none of the options applied. But only now I noticed that there is a small greyed out arrow I can click, which, does, indeed, take me to another screen and there is shows my incorrect name. Solved! Thank you.

My ipad defaults to the message "sent from my ipad". I didn't choose it. However, I can change the message by clicking on the sentence, which is a blue clickable link. It annoys me when my devices insert their own advertising. I don't like that my tv says "sony" in large letters every time I turn it on.

Dedtired, you can change your settings so that phrase never shows up on emails you write.

(I can't remember exactly how, I think it was email signature setting.)

The only useful thing about "sent from my iPhone" is it helps to explain the typos in an email. Little keyboard + little screen + old eyes = typos. I know I removed the line on my iPad but I don't remember how, something easy in settings.
