Waterlily time

My night flowering waterlilies are getting their act together. They usually don't start flowering until the wet season rains ease off. These are Nymphaea 'H.C.Haarstick'. They stay open all night and then start to close up as it gets lighter in the morning. They're fully closed by the time the sun gets to them.

These are early morning photos from today, before the sun came up.

Love your waterlilies, much later in the year, there will be white ones appearing.
At long last we have temperatures in the teens, so the snow is gone.
I find this forum pesky, every time you touch something ads appear. I resent the ones that cover the photos, even if only briefly.
Keep posting your lovely flowers, at least I enjoy them.

Thanks Inga. Funny, I don't get ads appearing. I wonder if they only have ads for North America. I have white ones but this year they're not doing well. In fact most of the waterlilies have had a hard time this year with something eating them. Just this morning I found the flowers had been chewed off one of my day flowering ones. Only a couple of half chewed petals left floating on the water.

They are indeed a mess. Look for the growing tips which will have some new or small growth on them. Go down from the tips and cut a chunk of the roots off around the growth tips. Discard the rest of the roots. What you want are the growing tips with some roots extending from them. Repot with soil and gravel over the roots, leaving the growing tip up and dirt free. On an established plant, you will have multiple tips so you can divide the lilies too. Typically, they are really hardy. As long as you protect the tips and have some roots extending from them, they are easy to repot and virtually indestructible. Once repotted and fertilized, plunck them back underwater and let them go. They should be fine! Good luck!

Here's a quote from my book, American Catherine. :D ('Sulphurea' has a mexicana-type rhizome) - "Mexicanas have small rhizomes that resemble little pineapples. However, instead of growing side-eyes, mexicanas have long, fleshy runners that produce, at their ends, entirely new tubers. These new tubers may take one of two different shapes. Sometimes they are shaped like small pineapples, just like the mother plant. Sometimes, though, the new tubers will look like little fingers joined together at one end, so that they look like a bunch of bananas. In the fall, mexicanas often produce these banana-like rhizomes at the bottom of the pot. These can be overwintered in damp sand or sphagnum moss, and then planted up in the spring. "Because of its odd running habit, a mexicana-type rhizome is best potted in the middle of its container. Mexicanas should be divided and repotted every year to prevent the container from being over-crowded with small plants. Rhizomes can be divided from their fleshy runners any time during the spring or summer, provided the new plants will have enough time to establish themselves before winter." It sounds like maybe that mother rhizome may have grown immensely in the 2 years it was in that pot. But I'm no expert. :D I hope it all works out for you! Brenda

Hi

Ah the queen of flowers!! usually hear that title for Orchids or roses but to me the WL are more spectacular I repotted mine too early this year ,had a cold spell and they were set back but are recovering nicely

I often have trouble with "chewers " Afraid of poisoning the water so can't use sprays ,fortunarely they outgrow them?? lol

Inga I dislike the ads but understand the need to make money?? At least they pay for the service?? Would assume the reason it changed hands was revenue was falling?? So many websites are making gazillions but I'll bet not this one If they start to charge I'm gone !! lol gary

Mine are just sitting in the bottom of the ponds (and my dam). The day flowerers are tough and can stay there when the water dries out and the soil becomes baked hard in the sun. The night flowerer can cope with drying out if the dry season is short. Mostly I put the night flowerer tubers in a bag with leaves and they keep until the next wet season. I also have some smaller permanent ponds where I put some tubers and they keep growing right through the dry season. When the wet season rains come I just pull up some tubers and put them in the non-perennial ponds as they fill from the rains.
