More roses popping open today
Comments (13)Gean Ann, I'm glad you like the blue bonnets, they are great plants. Partly because they are so beautiful and partly because they are the state flower of Texas, they are prized here. Lol, you're right, it's practically a state law that all kids here have their picture taken at least once in their life sitting in a field with bluebonnets all around them. Carol, my mom aways warned me about planting peonies too deeply, so I'm glad that's not a problem with yours. I don't know why your SB won't bloom. Yep, the rose blooms are popping up all over the place around here now. I even have a tiny bloom on one of my new Marie Pavie bands from Vintage (and lots of buds on it too). It's way to early to really say, but that bloom does not even resemble the blooms on my non-Vintage Marie Pavie. That may change as it ages, but this first one is much tighter and smaller. It looks promising. Joe, the peonies grow here, but they are much happier even just 300 miles northeast of here where my Mom lives in Arkansas. In her garden they are spectacular, in my garden the same plants are nice, but pale by comparison. My Festiva Maxima is several years old and it a very small plant that produces one giant, perfect bloom per year. My Sara Bernhardt is a lot newer, and thankfully, a lot more vigorous. Comments (10)Thanks for the responses. I'll prune the shrub tomorrow. Hopefully it'll keep a decent shape after all the dead branches are gone. morz8, I unfortunately didn't see your post till after I'd already gotten a cage, but I'll definitely look into Critter Ridder. I've been using several different sprays for deer and rabbit, but I didn't know you could get stuff for cats and dogs as well. (Also, if it really repels squirrels, I'll be extra thrilled.) We have a handful of neighborhood cats (a couple of which just seems like strays) that wander in and out of our yard, and I tend to enjoy their companyor at least find them innocuous. Don't know why that one fellow got so aggressive with a young shrub that isn't even good for sharpening his claws against!...See MoreCats! How to keep them out!
Comments (24)Well, personally I never garden without my gloves on. Too many soil born diseases that have nothing to do with cats. I think I'd have a "Monk" attack if I actually had to dig with my bare hands. Having said that I do have to keep my cat out of my freshly sown plantings and for that I use hardware cloth which I make into low Quanset hut type structures that I place over the seed rows(they look like this: ( only right side up). Cats won't walk on them and when the seedlings are high enough I remove the quanset hut structure. Cats won't purposely walk on the small plants as a rule. Don't make them too high though or that will intrigue a cat to see what's going on under the hump. As for mulch, once it settles down my cat mostly leaves it alone....See MoreHow to keeps cats from fertilizing the hosta?
Comments (8)It began life as a mulched bed with ground oak leaves added every year because nothing but saw briers would grow under the big oak. I have put in hosta, heuchera, sedums, wild geranium and creeping jenny this year. I will try the blackberry canes--there are plenty of them around. I saw a squirrel holding a cane down at the tip and eating berries. I wished I had my camera. He was cute, normally I don't like squirrels because they clean up all my fruit before I get a chance to eat any....See Morejkellydallas
