garden edging question

Hello all,

This isn't exactly a question about roses, but it is about materials I might use to create a border around a rose bed. I'm building up my "hell strip" to plant a few low growing roses and other flowers, and want to prevent the soil and mulch from sliding into the sidewalk and gutter. I need a border material that is fairly thin (so as not to take away too much space from the flower bed), and that is inexpensive. I am currently leaning toward repurposing some roofing drip caps made from galvalume, which you can see at this link. My idea was to bury the shorter section, using landscape pins to hold it in place. Is there any reason I should not do that? I like the look of steel edging, but I don't know enough about this material to know if there is a down side. Any feedback would be much appreciated!
