If you aren't selling it, keep the cabinets you like. Right now, white cabinets are popular, so you could always get them painted if you decided to sell.

We built our current home in 2000. Maple cabinets were the newest thing then (pickled oak was just on its way "out"). A few years later, expresso cabinets were all the rage. Now, it's gray, pale green, or white painted cabs. In two years, it'll be something else. There's no point in ripping out great cabinets for the latest thing 'cause it'll change shortly afterwards. Enjoy your maple cabs!

We just sold our home with natural maple cabinetry. It sold in 4 days. So there are lots of people out there who never got on the white painted cabinet bandwagon and are looking for something a little bit different.

You don't need to be stuck in the 90s. Upgrade the countertops. Get new appliances. Put in new light fixtures. Paint a more up-to-date shade. Ditch any window treatments that scream 90s.

Is there a committee somewhere that decides what's in and what's out? I want to know who elects them. Personally, I think people can get way too hung up on what's "in" and forget what they like.

You liked the cabinet color until you watched that show. You aren't planning to sell anytime soon. Enjoy your pretty cabinets and don't worry about what one silly show said!

I agree, if you like the cabinets then there are certainly many other ways to update your kitchen. Don't get hung up on trends --especially if you aren't planning to sell any time soon. You are already doing well if you like the cabinets currently installed!

I also dislike dark cabinets, unless it's a very well-lit room! We have light color cabs, not trendy, but exactly what I like. I'm the one who lives here after all ;-)

Glad to hear I may not be clinging to the past and not appearing like someone hanging onto an outdated hairstyle for far too long.

I do like to wonder what will come next. It has been painted white or dark stained cabinetry for a long time, it seems. The gray seems fresh, but something that would get old fast.

I miss pickled wood and feel like it didn't get its 15 minutes of fame.

I like natural maple. I had it in my last house and it was so easy. It doesn't show dirt much, is easy to clean, and if it gets scratched, you can't tell. Kitchen was 11 years old when we sold and everyone thought it had just been put in.

I also don't think maple was as overdone as oak in the 80's, so it isn't as decade specific.

@handmethathammer - My new house under construction now is going to have grey stained maple on the perimeter, aluminum/glass uppers, and a white island so maybe that all will be looking dated in 10 years who knows? But the older I get the less I care!

This "dated" concept makes me crazy! There's high quality, well designed, tasteful stuff that is classy now, would have been classy 100 years ago, and will still be classy in 100 years. Then there's the bad and the ugly, which might be popularized for a brief instant in time, but is never other than bad and ugly. (think avocado green appliances, drum shades on lamps, and fake "distressed" surfaces). If you have quality and good basic design just enjoy it!
