OK, I did the repot, and after soaking the rootball in a weak physan solution, found that rottage had reduced the root mass so signficantly that I was able to repot in a MUCH smaller pot -- 4" across, pretty deep. I did a pretty perlite-heavy mixture (betwen 2:1 and 3:1 miracle gro mix:perlite, respectively). A little concerned I packed it tight, but at least the roots are getting a chance to dry out now. The plant seems to be stable -- still not healthy, but no fast death from root rot/soaked soil like before. I will post updates for those who wonder (1) whether I ruined the plant by dunking its roots in the weak fungicide for a bit and (2) whether (at least in this case) it has been possible to rescue a severly aging peace lilly via root trim and transplantation in faster-draining-soil. Jane, yes it's in a flimsy clear pot, since it is a thin plastic, I think I will just do,what you do, and a few slits with a knife and watch I don't hit any roots. Bouldergrower , that's a nice set up you have!! I have double pane windows but being in PA freezin temps are the norm from November till end of March! I think I left mine on the sills all winter, only those that had blooms were moved from the sills. I haven't added anything to increase the humidy, I have radiant heat so my house isn't super dry in the winter. I've read that humidity trays help and I've also read they don't do a thing! Lol. I guess with orchids you try many methods and see what works best in your own home. I'm now sorry I gave my sister a nice long double shelved planter, I could use it this year since I have so many more orchids.

Since these native orchids seem to be extremely picky about conditions, I don't want to take the chance of changing their immediate environment with anything, I just need to put a stake or something there. The first one we found that Prem came to photograph seems to be very finicky. The last 2 years the leaves appeared and only 1 or 2 bloomed. Then there were some years that many of them bloomed. Since I'm not an expert I don't know why this happens, I just feel lucky when they do appear.

lemon lime I don't see organic matter in the ingredients? its mostly peat moss which promix are you thinking about lemon lime? I love it! lol I never thought about it but at a certain point when I was about to repot my large cara cara the large garbage bin did look good lol pots are so pricey now Brian over $100 I think since covid everything plant related has gone up in price its insane! oh Brian your Shasta is beautiful!!! I cant wait for the Shasta gold to fruit mine is still so tiny but going through its second flush now I'm so excited! is it good every single year Brian? Brian ever since I put my trees in the prolix its gone crazy with growth they're halfway to your large trees :) Lol Brian 15 trees my goodness how are you still walking right now! James I actually fertilize every single watering with a little miracle grow I also have some jacks professional fertilizer so I do feed the one in the bark mix although who knows ill get back to you next year I suppose :)
