Accelerating planting time after pre-emergent
Comments (5)The spreading of a good quality compost is always recommended to inject organic matter into the soil which, when carried out as a spring program, will encourage moisture retention, worm production, and good overall soil which grass seed will grow much better. Pre-emergent is, what it means....a means to prevent the germination of seeds which come from weeds, et al, It is usually applied at a specified time when the weeds are going to seed. Pre-emergent then is a weed seed killer. It is therefore, also a killer of any kind of seed---including grass. I believe a minimum time of interval between application of the pre-emergent and seeding a lawn, is about 6 weeks. This is the reason why the pre-emergent is applied when the weeds are sprouting their seeds which will deny germination of the vast majority ---but not all--of them. The company that did the application of the pre-emergent should have known when you can safely carry out a seeding program. Give them a call....See MorePre-emergent Granules
Comments (4)Is it plastic or weed barrier cloth? Plastic will work, if it doesn't have holes in it -- but-- if it has been down a long time and sand and dirt has accumulated on top of it, weeds can and will germinate and grow in that stuff on top. Weed barrier cloth is a different story. Weeds will not only germinate on top of it, but will put their roots right through it. It really isn't much of a barrier. As for the preventive, I think it depends on what you are using, but the general idea is whether the chemical (or corn gluten) is in contact with the seeds, not if it is in the soil so much....See Morepre-emergents and post-emergents
Comments (15)Dave, I think they they may be overused and are useful in a limited set of circumstances. A row of conifer screening happens to be one of those uses. Yes, the fabric (and I was only recommending a geotexile type, not a roll of impervious black plastic) will degrade. By the time it degrades completely, the conifers will have grown large enough that their shade will start to cut down on weed germination. In my observation, they undoubtedly increase soil moisture retention and reduce the need for watering. And in their first couple years, they do keep weeds down, which is the most crucial period for reducing weed competition as the plants are getting established. Later on, the few weeds that start growing in the mulch are easy to rake or pull out. I've had some in my landscape now for 5 years, all the plants around it have grown just fine, I've never had to water them in the past 3 droughty summers, and I expect in 5 years it will probably mostly degrade but by then it will be filled in with mature plants and there will be less light for weeds to grow. One size does not fit all and the article you posted has some good points, but I stand by my recommendation. BTW Ken's recommendation to not make a screen of a single plant type is good too....See MoreSurflan Pre-emergent
Comments (15)People sometimes wonder why I so strongly oppose the use of most of these unnecessary "weed" controls or killers and it is simply because we have around us 8 EPA superfund sites that are cleaning up after chemical companies dumped their waste and it has contaminated the groundwater. We were assured by the chemists that dumping that waste would not be a problem and what they did not say was that these chemicals they dumped mixed together, a synergistic effect, and created a much more dangerous chemical then either one was before, so now 50 years later the EPA is still pumping out the groundwater, filtering it to remove the contaminanats, and then sending it out at great expense to you and me. Every one that applies one or more of these poisons is poisoning the water I drink and potentially adversly affecting future generations. Keep in mind that all the water we have right now is all the water we will ever have, no more is being made and we recycle every bit of water. Any of the water you use has been recycled many times. Cosing your eyes or mind to that does not make it any less true....See Morerook81styles
