Help identifying an old Homelite Super 2 chainsaw

I decided to pull down the chainsaw that has been sitting on my top shelf for the past few years and trim some trees. It was given to me by my father when we moved down here to Houston. It is an old Homelite. I can't seem to find a model number though. It is marked Homelite Super Two Automatic Oiling on the side of the case. It is a 14" bar. I call it Little Joe. It worked well enough to take out several tree limbs before the recoil stopped catching.

I'd like to fix it up and get it running great again, so it can go back into its case for when I need it again. If a hurricane hits again, I want a chainsaw that is ready to go.

However, I can't seem to locate a model number on it. It is labeled as a Homelite Textron. Where would I be able to locate the part number? I'd like to find an exploded diagram and parts so I can figure out what is wrong with it and how to fix it.

The chrome/silver label on top has no model number on it at all. I'll try and get some pics posted.

I would just replace the gas line first ans check the filter. it the gas line is as old as the saw it's probably cracked and leaking or sucking air. If you do replace the gas line it will take awhile for the gas to get pulled up to the carb and all the air worked out. use carb. spray some carb cleaner into the carb. with the trottle held wide open so the saw will run for a short time off the carb. cleaner and will help pull the gas and air out of the line IMO. Another thought is do you see any gas dripping from the saw either out the muffler or along the bottom below the carb.? The hard starting problem or no start can easily be troubleshoot by spraying a short 2 or 3 second blast of carb. cleaner down the carb. If it hits and runs a short time off the carb. cleaner you have a gas starvation problem. Don't worry about the carb. cleaner I do this all the time and have NEVER Damaged any of my equipment. Plus you get a side benifit cleaning action of the carb. cleaner being pulled through the engine. Another thought is it maybe flooding, when the saw gets flooded you will have the comb chamber, crankcase and spark plug coated with a thin layer of oil which will prevent it from sparking sometimes. If you remove the spark plug and it saturated with gas/oil mixture (and it should be if you put mixed gas in it) wash out the comb. chamber and spark plug by spray carb. cleaner into the spark plug hole and pull the rope several times till all the oil is washed out. now put the spark plug back in and start it. Last thought is the diaphram in the carb has a tiny hole or crack and it sucks air preventing it from pulling the gas through the carb. Old saws are like new born babies IMO you have to clean the crap out of them if you want them to run and be happy!

Usually oil, saw dust, and time make the rope stiff. when you pull it it jumps off track and wraps around the winder locking it up. To know for sure remove the pull rope assy. and see if the rope is wrapped around the winder? iF so pull the rope off the winder, pull the rope all the way out, lock it down with vise grips, remove the old stiff rope and replace it with new rope. measure about the same length rope and add about 6" so to adjust later when you put the pull handle on. Thread it in and tie the knot. Release the vise grips and let the new rope wind back in, pull it a couple of times and watch it unwind and wind, mark a spot that will alow the rope to be long enough for starting and not have slack when you put the hand back on. If all good install the pull rope housing assemble. with the three screws you removed. If thats not it. pull on it and watch the winder unwind and wind the rope back in the pulley. Remove the plug, try to move the flywheel? does it rotate with the plug out? Yes/no?, if yes-spray carb. cleaner down the spark plug hole put the winder assy back on and pull the rope washing the carb. cleaner out. do this few times. Clean the plug, check gap. spray it will carb. cleaner and put it back in. attempt to start it. If NO-the flywheel won't turn you have two choices, disassemble and find out the problem or chuck it to the curb so somebody like me will get it going.

Poki, Problem solved is Good News! If you have been in many 2-cycle carbs related to the saw's etc, compare a couple of diagrams. Usually I can back-track and find my errors as a lesson. My usual lesson is not taking my time due to too many projects. Such as: I forgot to get my 2nd cup of coffee before a :30 minute welding repair as my only project today. 2.5 hrs later my back told me to STOP, after extended welding and grinding to beef up a jig to quarter BBQ wood. Then I did some overdue WeedEating before cleaning and heading inside for lunch. I had coffee for lunch. LOL! loger PS. Old parts are not that hard to find. BUT! ItÃ¢ÂÂs more on your time vs a mechanics. Post the oiling matter and IÃ¢ÂÂll see if my generic troubleshooting will help.

Look through the list of youtubes and other info at the link below to see if you find the help you need. Describe what appears to be the problem with getting the saw going. A recoil starter problem could possibly be identified from Pics if it is wear or catch springs broken. Have you examined the recoil catch mechanics? Show good pics of both sides of what you see (on the flywheel and in the cover). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I saw a or some diagram listed w/o opening any. Depending on your need a parts diagram might get you going. Also think about if it has been sitting a few years with untreated fuel a diagram w/n help to clean your carb. A diagram w/n help ck or adjust for spark. If you have broken or worn mechanical parts a parts diagram could be your friend.

Go to www.homelite.com>parts look up. Go to model number, click on Contains then type super 2. You will get all the variations but rewinds should be common to all versions. Either the plastic pulley is stripped or the pawl springs are broken.

Two good close pics should “Show The Need”. Attaching Pics can be a little challenge but my recent shared tips have worked for me. There is a glitch of added text when I Copy and Paste from MS Word. There is a glitch when I upload and insert attachments. I have learned to select attach behind the Black X showing by my image. Little Joe Should Run Soon!
