"How about this for a plan B. Can I throw them out in an area and they plant them THEN cover the area with large pieces of cardboard and mulch over that?" This plan will work if you use cardboard that is not very dense and wet it down well before covering with mulch. It will disintegrate by the time your bulbs start to push through. The question is: will your grass be dead by then? I don't know whether in your zone, grass stays green through the winter or not. If it does, then you won't have any problem with this method. I did that with mine last March with my Zoysia grass. I just checked again last week before planting bulbs. To my pleasure, the grass WAS dead and all the cardboards had gone mushy. Only the thick newspapers added throughout the summer had not broken down. "I have been wanting to get rid of alot of my grass anyway and this seems like a good way to do it." It is the easiest way to do it in my opinion. "While I am at it are there bulbs I can plant at the same time that will bloom late Spring, Summer, Late Summer Fall etc so I can have a year round blooming bed while planting everything at one time." Plant various spring bulbs, then Allium to bridge spring and summer, then Lilies, then Colchicum and fall crocus. Check out bulb catalogs and check blooming time of those bulbs. Check out the thread above too for ideas. "This would also eliminate the chance that I would be planting other perenials over top of my dafs." Nor necessarily so. I have a lot of bulbs among perennials and shrubs. In my garden, I have something interesting to look at all year. Have fun. Your winter is milder than mine. You'll have more choices.

Hi Jim, If you are giving the plant sun/water and it does not show signs of another blight on its leaves... my thought is that it is showing signs of soft rot. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do for the plant. Due to the leaves still appearing healthy it may be early in the progression of the disease. You could try a fungicide to address the issue, but it may be easier to just start over with a new plant. -Brian

You'll want to let them thaw completely before planting - don't try to pull them apart while frozen. Once they thaw out, the'll "wake up". You can plant some and hold some in the cooler for a short period of time. You want to get them planted before stem shoots start to sprout. Every variety is different, with some sprouting in a few days, and some taking much longer. The same variety can change throughout the year depending how long they have been held at the suppliers freezer. Most of the lilies bloom from late spring into the early summer period. If you want to time crops, then you have to give lilium bulbs a minimum of 1000 hours of cooling and after that you need to freeze them in at 28-29 fahrenheit to keep them stored for a prolonged period, and bring them out on a planned forcing schedule. A BIG enough freezer is what you will need, NOT just a big enough cooler. The cooler you will need for your flower storage. And for the question above about the lilybulbs, by all means please contact your supplier and discuss the issue you have. I have noticed that some varieties, especially when it's very hot catch up to the other lilies and they all bloom at once anyway. I know that the ones that are brought in are usually cut green and are not as nice as 'vine ripened'. I usually try to harvest about the day before they open naturally and then can hold some varieties for over a week or two in the cooler (38). There are a few that do not like that treatment.

I've started bulbs indoors for years being that I hail from good old unpredictable Edmonton! I have started tulips, daffs, asiatics, dahlias, glads, daylilies, hostas, irises, and even peonies in the house in early spring. Many I have overwintered in the garage in peat moss or shavings and then potted them up in the house. I usually start my glads every year this way and any others that didn't get planted in the fall or are bought early from Can Tire or Walmart. Never had any problems to speak of. :) I often pot up most of what I receive in bare root or bulb form as I like to give them a head start in the pot and then just put the whole root ball in the garden in summer or after blooming. Works for me. :) Looks like we are going to have another long, cool, wet spring here. :( Ginny
