Outdoor Thermometers

It got cold here last night with a hard frost, but just how cold I don't know. I wrapped my trees and placed Christmas lights on them to try and help. I have an Oregon Scientific wireless thermometer that always shows a higher and lower temp then what is reported by the news or even the local bank's reader board. I have read about calibrating thermometers but I don't know how to do this with the wireless sensor. The placement of the sensor is on a wooden post about 6 ft off of the ground and is shaded year round so I don't think it is due to any abnormal heating or cooling. Anyway my thermometer said it got down to 18 F last night, the bank said 23 and the news 24. As you can see the temps are all over the place with implications of a total crop loss to minimal with the wrapping on the trees. Do you guys recommend any thermometers? I will probably replace it with a large, low cost bulb thermometer and calibrate it with an ice bath, any thoughts?

Yeah..I've been looking off and on for some kind of recording station,...but
just out at the nursery where it gets colder, couldn't find anything so far battery operated.
It's nice to have, perhaps take a couple of other cheap [regular] thermometer and compare.
The higher up your sensor, the warmer it will be, place it to the level of where the actual damage would be.

I use a Davis Weather Station that is battery powered and solar charged. For me in S. California with lots of sunshine, this works very well for me. It will transmit information to my computer, and I also have it hooked up to my wireless router to transmit data to the web. Extremely reliable, and the folks at Davis are very helpful with questions, set up, etc.

The spring fling is in the morning, I'm excited. I know I'm new to the forum and to starting my own gardens but I'm still excited about the gathering and getting to meet so many new people. I haven't really introduced myself, so I'll give a small bio. My name is Rachel,I'm 23 years old and I live NE OK, near Tulsa. I'm originally from CA but my father was in the army when I was younger, and well...this is where we ended up. I've been with the same wonderful man for the last five years and we plan to get married. We bought a house, a fixer upper, this past fall and the front and back yards are in desperate need of plants, lol. I grew up with a wonderful mother, who loves plants and gardening, so Im really excited about fixing up my yards. Also, I work at a Lowes, in the outside lawn and garden, so I spend just about everyday taking care of plants and helping people select the right plants. I was going to bring a painting and a stuffed owl for door prizes, but my friend really wanted the painting so I'll try to find something else. Also, I found the seeds that I collected from my mothers garden, from this past fall. I'll bring them incase someone wants some. at our old shop we had one like that in teh manager's office. the outdoor unit was actually mounted 325' away inside our tower building. this was so he could tell easily if it was getting too hot in there. the AC unit refused to start on it's own after any power blip, thus the need for the sensor. it sure beat sloshing out there in mud and water to see if everythign was cooling fine. so you could be picking up anybody's transmitter!

WOW...not cheap but these still wouldn't' work for me, only goes to max.
minus 40, I get sometimes minus 45C -49F that's why I couldn't find anything!

Konrad I rarely get below -30 f. Below that i think it is just " oh well next year". This year it was very few peaches , no apcot, few pears, but good apples,grapes some plumbs, and great blueberries, I hope the 11' of snow will make his year better.

Konrad a battery remote may not be the one you want. My springfield wireless stopped working around -4f last winter ---the several batteries I tried became to cold to function at around -4f--- this may be a problem with all batteries. Does anyone know of a battery unit that can go down to -40f?

Yes, good for mentioning, I'm aware of that,.. on my trail cameras!
We might still be some years away with newer technology!
But...lets say to use one who runs on a 12 V car battery and solar cell, ..there should still be enough um-pf to power up a little monitor system.
