Spring Fling Swap 2012 Sign Up Thread

The OK Garden Forum's annual Spring Fling & Plant Swap will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 beginning around 11:00 ish and wrapping up around 2 or 3 p.m. It will be held at my (p-mac) acreage in far north east Norman, just north of Lake Thunderbird. The purpose of this gathering is to see old friends, meet new ones, and swap plants & other garden related items. In recent years we've had close to 80 in attendance plus a whole lot of fun!

Most common question: "What am I supposed to bring?" That's easy enough. As the word "Swap" implies, bring what you have and give as good as you get. In addition to plants, people bring a covered dish to share, a door prize, and a cash contribution toward the facility. This brings up the next most common question: "I don't have any plants to swap. Can I still come?" Well of course and you will be welcome! If you don't have plants, bring an extra door prize, a jumbo size covered dish or up the cash ante toward facilities. Someone travelling from far away may bring a gazillion plants to share but no hot food, while a person living closer might bring a hot sliced ham and few plants. No plants to share? Bring extra door prizes to go with your covered dish. You have no plants, you have no plans to take any home and you won't be staying to eat or win a door prize? Make a contribution toward facilities and call it good. There are no set rules because we want everyone to feel comfortable coming for the social aspect. Generally, think about what you intend to leave with and contribute in kind.

There are two kinds of trades that take place at the Swap. First - there are the pre-arranged trades between two people in attendance. Pre-arranged trades are to be clearly labeled with TO and FROM, then placed on a designated table. Labeling and placing them in a brown paper bag helps. This year the pre-arranged table will be located a far distance from the main event to minimize the confusion about who those items should go home with. Please remember not to take items from that table unless they were specifically brought for you.

In the second category there are open-season trades for everyone to choose what they like. What kind of things do people bring? In addition to plants you can bring seeds, seed starting trays and containers, plant markers, plastic pots, cardboard, or anything else you would like for someone to put to good use.

Aside from food and plants to swap and share, we hope that everyone will bring a door prize because it's more fun when everyone gets to take one home. Multiple contributions to the door prize table are always appreciated. This is also a good time to call attention to the door prize table. Those items aren't for open-season swapping. Look for the sign on the table before you snag the Holy Grail! What should I bring for a door prize? The sky is the limit, so I'll mention some items that were a hit in the past. Walls-o-Water, homemade jams and jellies, garden-themed Christmas ornaments, Tomato Tone, garden gloves, bird feeders, canning supplies, canning and gardening books, outdoor thermometers, half gallon of goats milk, tomato totes. Door prizes need not break the bank. Just think of something you would be excited to receive.

Bring lawn chairs and sunscreen, boxes or bags to haul your loot home. I have stickers in my yard, so keep that in mind when choosing your shoes that morning. I already have cups, but perhaps one or two people who are travelling far will offer to bring paper goods in lieu of a covered dish? Someone else might sign up to bring the ice. And speaking of ice, in the interest of all guests feeling welcome, adult beverages are better left at home.

Can I bring my children? The answer to this varies from year to year, but at my house the answer is always yes. I have an acreage where children can run and play, while still being seen and supervised. There are a couple of kid-friendly activities already in the works. My own grandkids will probably be there. For the duration of the party, we are all playing outdoors, adults and kids alike. I'll be reminding them that morning to use the porta potty and keep their games outside.

Can I bring friends? Bring as many as will fit in one car. LOL If we find that RSVPS for non-forum members push us over potty and parking capacity, I made need to make a retraction to ensure that participating forum members aren't excluded. And naturally, guidelines for "swapping" as described above along with what to bring apply to non-forum members as well.

If you plan to attend, please POST HERE, then send me an e-mail with the link provided on "My Page". The email doesn't need to say much, but do let me know who specifically is coming, with a break out of kids. In addition to headcount, the separate email ensures I have a good address for you when it is time to e-mail you a map to our location. If the e-mail does not go through, please send it to either Okiedawn or Seedmama. They have graciously agreed to pass them along to me. Special thanks to Seedmama for helping me draft this!

Since it is something as important as your granddaughter's senior prom, I won't pout. I wouldn't want y'all to miss seeing her that day because it is such an important day for her, but we'll still miss y'all.

I can bring you Texas Hummingbird Sage next year. None of my plants have come back from the drought yet, but I am sure they will. I believe they are totally indestructible as a group, although an individual plant or two may fall by the wayside here and there.

Dawn, I was posting while you were, but think I answered most of your questions. Yes, I knew where the recipe came from but likely wouldn't have tried it if you hadn't recommended it first. My daughter asked me to make some for her and I think she took 8 jars home. I made a batch of the blueberry-lime also but none has been opened. Al loves blueberries, but is not a big jelly fan so he probably hasn't even remembered that I made it. The store where I went today is where I buy the clear jel like I used for my apple pie filling that I canned last year. I bought some at the Amish store in Chouteau OK, but the store I went to today has a better price. Actually I buy a lot of things there and I think today was about $130. I buy mostly bulk items but I love their cream cheese. I bought 7 grain mix which I sometimes add to bread, raw sugar, bulk coconut, etc. etc. Yes, it was a trip just for that reason, but the main reason was to be away from home and the telephone. Actually it only rang once before we left town and it was the Judge wishing us Happy Anniversary. She calls every year and someday I'm going to ask her, if she is just relieved that we made it another year and didn't appear in her courtroom in an official capacity. LOL She is very thoughtful and never misses a birthday or anniversary and never fails to send a thank your for every little thing. I should be so thoughtful. When I was a child, I lived in Wilson and one of my classmates' parents owned the local funeral home. After I was grown, my sister thought it was great fun to say , "The undertaker asked about you when I saw him." Another daughter heard me mention Baker Creek and ordered a catalog and was excited to know that she could find the tomatoes she was interested in. She just bought a new house and I didn't even realize she had a garden, but I picked up a few things for her: True Black Brandywine and Carbon tomato and Lipstick and Golden Marconi Pepper. She has already grown her plants for this year, but figured those four are sure to get her hooked on heirlooms along with whatever else I send. Actually I was happy with my answer that I bought a few, but after you asked then I had to count. Ugh, seems I have more than I thought but they are mostly Al's fault. LOL I bought Sugar Snap peas because I had a hard time finding a pack this year when I needed some. Seminole Pumpkin although I think I still have some from the swap. Al bought two packages of Tomatillo's which I had conveniently failed to buy because I don't like them, but I guess I have to plant a few now. He bought Tomatillo Verde and Purple Coban. Then he went eggplant crazy and I already had seeds at home. I suggested Ping Tung because I have been happy with those. He decided to add a few extra: Lao Green Stripe, Lao White, Malaysian Dark Red, Japanese White Egg, Florida Market, Louisiana Long Green, Rotondo Bionco Sfumoto di Roso, Jilo Tingue Verde Claro, and Long Purple. I hope he remembers next year why he is building a screen house to grow them in so the flea beetles don't kill them all. LOL I bought peppers but they are mostly just replacement packs since I rarely get around to saving seeds. Sweet Yellow Stuffing, Golden Marconi, Corno Di Toro Giallo (2), Odessa Market, Lipstick, and Santa Fe Grande. I picked tomatoes and so did he, but you probably won't have trouble deciding which ones he picked. Some are weird, one is an ox-heart..... Stupice, Prudens Purple, Dr Wyche's Yellow, True Black Brandywine, Black Early, Carbon, Black from Tula, Pink Grapefruit, Green Zebra, Mortgage Lifter, Red Cheese, Golden Monarch, T C Jones, and Huge Lemon Oxheart. More than one pack in some cases, and a free pack of Love-In-A-Mist. I needed the Sugar Snaps for next year and I wanted to get a Paul Roberson and some additional Black Cherry but they were out of both tomatoes. Please remember that this is my husband of 39 years today, who thinks I should only plant one or two types of tomatoes each year (but loves them all). He is also the same husband who thinks I should have everything I want, and will help me decide what I want in most cases, if I fail to choose for myself. Also, the husband who can't resist a bargain and enjoyed the fact that peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant had 'special pricing' today. I could open my own farmers market if I had a little land!

Hello! Sorry I haven't been around! I have had one of the craziest weeks ever! I sent everyones envelopes out earlier in the week, so hopefully you all have started to receive them! For the ones who have, I'm so glad you like everything! I had a lot of fun hosting the swap and really look forward to doing it again. I have to cancel the BINGO! game. Forgive me,...I received Melissa's (mellovesgardening) box yesterday and as I'm sitting here typing this I've been sampling the totally tasty sugar free, Splenda-sweetened, variety flavored "Jelly Belly" jelly beans she included (plus *regular* sugared ones as well for Elly & Roy (told Roy they're "Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans" from the wizarding world of Harry Potter)) - So, shall I tell you, now, about the rest of Melissas's marvelous box conents?! Yes?!! Right, then,... Seriously, I'll tell you what, Melissa may be a newbie, but she certainly packs a great swap box!! Item #1) A neat little hollow ceramic guy,...green with blue sneakers. Muppet representation of a green thumb critter, perhaps? Anyway, he's kewl (there are even small white shoelaces hot-glued to the sneakers) and he was stuffed with sugar free Life Savers candies and a folded-up surprise packet of Rye Grass seeds (cleverly sneaky, that!). The Life Savers have since been removed to a zip-bag and now the Muppet green thumb is next to our computer, loaded with Q-Tips. Useful, yes, although arguably not nearly as much fun. Item #2) A wonderful tin of "Badger Balm - For Hardworking Hands" organic hand balm. Elly and I are both using this already,...mostly Elly. Nice stuff! It's made-up of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Beeswax, Castor Oil, Aloe, and Birch & Wintergreen essential oils. Smells good, not greasy. Feels great! :) Items #3) Candy-candy-candy!! Woo hoo!! Hey guys, I think I'm going to have to scale back to "maybe" for the fling. A few weeks ago I found out I was pregnant (!!!), and the morning sickness started over the weekend. My attendance will likely depend on how I feel the day of, but I'll try to be there. I think I said I would bring some coolers of bottled water and pop. I'll still do that if I come, but perhaps someone else could bring some drinks too just in case?

Not to be totally redundant, but CONGRATULATIONS to both of you. That's wonderful news. Well, the pregnancy is wonderful news, but the morning sickness is not. Hopefully the morning sickness will last for only a few weeks.

If you are are not able to make it to the Spring Fling, we will miss you, but we totally understand.

SSSSQQQQUUUEEELLLL! Heather - I'm so happy and excited for you!!! Wonderful news that makes up for you IF not being able to attend!! I know you're of the scientific mind that will do the research needed to give you the tools to avoid the "morning sickness". In other words, keep food in your tummy. It will take care of the over-load of pregnancy hormones that are in your system.

Another little gardener is coming!!!!

And about the map e-mails....um, tomorrow...really! I'm 2/3 there...but I'm too tired to finish tonite. Watch your "in-box" tomorrow....or watch for another apology from me. Seriously, I'm close to hitting the "send" button. Just gonna take me about 10 more minutes with a lucid, energized brain. Who am I kidding? Like I ever really have that? LOL! Really, Gang. Give me time to proof the list and it's ALL good.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm getting the hang of the nibbling food all day thing, and plain tortilla chips are now my new best friend, LOL. I'm so glad I started my garden when I did, because I can't wait to snack on all the awesome and organic veggies! My aunt even told me she's going to make me homemade baby food from her garden, too. Yay!

The homemade baby food from the garden is just the best stuff because it is so pure and so fresh. When our son was little, I made it sometimes when we had the fresh veggies in production. Back then, you couldn't even buy organic baby food in jars like you can now, so I just made my own.

I am second to Dawn on homemade baby food. Our kids are growing up by eating only homemade baby food...indeed they never liked the taste of baby food bought from store, since then we started preparing our own at home. There are tons of ways to make fresh and healthy baby food from the homegrown vegetables, fruits, tubers and homemade yogurt, cheese, etc.

Ok, the kid count is 11 and I hope it stays there :). Most of the goody bag items were sold by the even dozen, and to get two dozen just in case would have been super pricey, so I went with one dozen.

Each kid will get a Garden Gnome Goody bag, 6 insect and reptile tattoos, 3 gummy bugs, an insect finger puppet, and a design-your-own flower and insect garden sticker scene.

My kids will be bringing baskets for Seedmama's wonderful eggs, too! :)

Very cute, Jo! I predict my oldest will try to barter his other contents for more gnomes. I don't know what it is but he loves them. When we go door to door for Cub Scout popcorn, it's a 30 minute discourse at every house that has gnomes!

Your eldest is out of luck, because the only gnomes I will have are in the form of bags. If I see a small prize or two between now and then that is "gnomish", I will grab it for him.

I am feeling very bitter about gnomes right now.

Two weeks ago, our backyard was robbed. They stole our hammock, my concrete garden gnome that I got on vacation when blueberry picking in Kansas City, the kids' bench, their table and chairs, their sand table...and numerous garden ornaments etc. A small mosiac table. A toad house. My solar girl garden statue. Assorted hangings that were on my fence (glass sun, butterfly, etc). The kids' watering cans and shovels. My racheting pruners. I was super mad and I called the police and filed a report, but there is almost no chance that I will get the stuff back.

People are scumbags, and it will take us years on our current budget to replace everything.

PS when this happened, DH said that no one is welcome at our house, now or next year. I hope he changes his mind. I am bitter and sad and very angry, but would still like to host spring fling 2013.

I am sorry your family was victimized by burglars. That is just awful. It also is incredibly common nowadays no matter where you live--big towns, small towns, out in the middle of nowhere, etc. I am astonished at how common burglary has become in our county, particularly in the last year.

I understand your DH's feelings right now, but hope that after he calms down, he'll change his mind because you know we'd love for you to host the 2013 Spring Fling. You know that we'll understand if he doesn't change his mind.

Jo, that sucks! Do I remember something about you giving away things from your house before the major construction started to people on CL? Do you think it might have been someone from that group? We often use CL to advertise our rental properties and I always feel a little bit nervous about it. Make sure you have deleted any posts on CL about it, too, because people look at stuff that is MONTHS old and still contact us about it - I always think to myself - "Really? It says Open House Feb 10. It's April now."

In other Fling related news, I am going to have to eat and run, so I will be there at 11am sharp to unload my goodies. Found out I have to make to all the way to Yukon by 1:45pm for work and Google Maps says that's over an hour drive. Will be testing the lead foot gene that runs in my family.

I will prep a ton of bamboo poles (trim down to fit in my SUV) this weekend, and bundle them up. Also have some 2" PVC blinds that I've meant to cut into plant ID markers - might try to put together some bundles of those, too, might make for a small door prize(s). Carol's cement planters are coming with me, and possibly a few blackberry cuttings for JLHart (these are fruiting right now, is it ok to take a cutting?)

Have a few metal "garden art" things left by the seller of our house, and maybe a heavy concrete birdbath - that will be as space and my back's strength allows.

Look forward to seeing everyone, even if it's for a short time!

I am very sorry to hear about your theft! I am always saddened by what people will do and the way one bad apple can do so much harm. Do you have flea market or used knick knack store nearby? Based on what I have seen, people will steal amost anything to get a few bucks for drug money.

Ok, first - Jo - THAT FREAKIN' STINKS BIG TIME!!! But sadly, I kinda understand how you & your DH feel. Just imagine if it was your in-laws that stole the stuff. We'll get thru this one way or another. Enuf said.

I'd really like to come out and check it out. How can I get directions?
It will be my first time to an event like this so I'll get a feel for it and be better prepared next time.
I have been trying out new things this last year like flax (for spinning) and native wildflowers and plants that make good dye (for the linen later)
Also it's my second year trying my own vegetable garden.
I have things, I'm just getting started though and not quite ready to split anything. Will have a lot of Coreopsis tinctoria and indian blanket seeds soon :0

JDStar - I don't think I have seen you post before and I don't see your zone. Are you in Oklahoma? Why don't you tell us a little about yourself and what plants you are interested in. Do you have your veggie garden planted?

Yes, I am in NW OKC. That was actually my very first post so there aren't any others :)
I have some stuff planted, bell peppers, a couple of tomatoes, okra, strawberries, potatoes, lettuce, onions.
I kinda fly by the seat of my pants and follow directions the next time when that doesn't work out.

I'm really interested in native wildflowers and plants that can be used for dye (ie, madder, coreopsis, indigo, weld, woad, henna...)

I got my flax in good and early and it's closing in on 2' tall right now. I don't know if I will just let the seeds ripen and have a fuller crop next year or if I want to try to process about 1/2 of what's growing and see if I can spin it. I'm afraid that it won't be enough to complete a project so I'm still pondering that.

About me:
I am a former OKCPS art teacher. I'm a stay at home mom now (2YO girl)and I run an online business where I sell things I have woven.
I volunteer in the horticulture department at the OKC zoo on tuesdays, started that about 6 weeks ago. I've really enjoyed learning about the plants they use, why and how they do things.
I also volunteer with the OKC CERT program. (Community Emergency Response Team)
I've learned a lot with them too. I've got my ham radio license KF5NRK but I don't ever get on my radio.

I've been married 5 years now and hubby is deployed. actually he's still in country but by next week he will be in afghanistan.

I go by JD but I will also answer to Jennifer, not much else though :)

I trried to follow p-mac's directions about emailing to RSVP but I kept getting an error message.

Also, if you guys allow my to come out, I don't have anything to trade garden wise, but I'd be happy to bring some woven bookmarks to trade.

Let me know if there was something else you wanted to know. I feel like I've just rambled on and may not have focused

Hi, JD!!! Welcome to the forum! Your post gave us a good intro so glad to have you aboard! Sorry for the e-mail issue. OK GW never seems to like my member page. =( However, when I started this thread I requested copies of post sent to my in-box and yours showed up complete with your e-mail address. I've sent you the maps. Don't forget sunscreen, a chair and to wear shoes that will keep the stickers out. As for myself, I'd LOVE to have a bookmarker! And you do weaving? We need to talk...but I won't go into detail here.

And when you tell your hubby about this crazy bunch you're about to meet (or met), please tell him for all of us that we very much appreciate his sacrifices of time and effort. We all know he must miss his home, you and your little girl very much.

JD, you've stumbled into a great group! This will be my second Fling, and to say I've been looking forward to it for a year is not overstating it a bit. I was a wallflower last year, being the newbie on the block (and nursing some lingering High School "outsider" personality traits), but am excited to visit with everyone this year!

The spring fling is in the morning, I'm excited. I know I'm new to the forum and to starting my own gardens but I'm still excited about the gathering and getting to meet so many new people. I haven't really introduced myself, so I'll give a small bio.

My name is Rachel,I'm 23 years old and I live NE OK, near Tulsa. I'm originally from CA but my father was in the army when I was younger, and well...this is where we ended up. I've been with the same wonderful man for the last five years and we plan to get married. We bought a house, a fixer upper, this past fall and the front and back yards are in desperate need of plants, lol. I grew up with a wonderful mother, who loves plants and gardening, so Im really excited about fixing up my yards. Also, I work at a Lowes, in the outside lawn and garden, so I spend just about everyday taking care of plants and helping people select the right plants.

I was going to bring a painting and a stuffed owl for door prizes, but my friend really wanted the painting so I'll try to find something else.

Also, I found the seeds that I collected from my mothers garden, from this past fall. I'll bring them incase someone wants some. That way I'll have something to trade, and won't feel like such a mooch if someone gives me something. : )

I hope everyone sleeps good tonight and I can't wait to meet all of you.
