Cause of low platelet count???

Recently our groomer cut our dogs hair extra short (in the middle of winter). Having been stripped of his warm fleecy winter coat, our dog shivered at night in our very cold kitchen. Within 3 days of this haircut, our Cocker's platelet count dropped to a "red zone" dangerously low level and his temperature role to 105. Question: Is the haircut related to this condition or is this a coincidence? Please give your feedback.

low platelets can be caused by an autoimmune disease among other things, so it's just a coincidence. occasionally blood clotting problems might be discovered after grooming when the owner or groomer notices bruising which is not caused by grooming but alerts the owner to a problem because it is abnormal. unless his platelets were tested just before, it's impossible to say if they suddenly dropped or if they were low for some time. what was the diagnosis the vet gave?

Shirnat, what did you vet say about the platelet count and is you dog now on prednisone? I highly doubt a haircut would cause an immune disorder, usually it is a reaction to an antibiotic, vaccines, certain foods or something else. Sometimes there is no known cause. I have a cocker/aussie mix that developed IMT (Immune mediated Thrombocytopenia) after her last puppy shot. She was put on prednisone and did thankfully recover from it. How is your dog doing now?

Great thread. As a 40 yr SFer, I have battled the 'best roses for colder climate' game for some time. I always thought the balling problem was from lighter colored roses, not from petal density but it makes sense I guess. What I see are roses whose petals are practically GLUED together once the nuclear winter of San Francisco (west side to boot) summer strikes. And not to throw a damper on the whole idea of petal count but in the old days of Sloat Garden Ctr when roses came in boxes, they always listed petal counts. I tended to favor the 20-30 counts but the downside is even if they open, they last only days before the wind and fog blow them apart. So it's like you can't win - get a 50 count rose and it won't open in July and August but looks great in May and Sept. or get a 22 count and watch it bloom and be gone within 2 days. Sloat has now cut back severely on their rose inventory but I noticed that they are now stocking more that say 'good in cold weather' and it is because of the fog presence (they told me). So far, I have had great luck with them even if they are 35-40 count roses.

Roses need a well hydrated vascular system to function at top capacity and produce those "catalog picture" blooms. During hot weather, it's very difficult to get them to that state because the heat causes the upper parts of the plant - mostly the leaves - to slow down their metabolism and that signals the roots to slow down their water intake. Roses don't need extra food during very hot weather. In fact, they need less. This is all part of a natural process - but the roses don't necessarily look good while it is happening. Keep the soil around the roots evenly moist. One of the best gardening tools you can get is a soil moisture meter. I always prescribe doxycyline and prednisone for every case of suspected tick born disease (thrombocytopenia, immune-mediated anemia, leukopenia) because there are many rickettsial diseases that we can't test for instantly, and it is too dangerous to wait to start treatment for results of those tests. Sucrulfate is to prevent or treat ulcers, which can be caused by prednisone.

My 6 yr old dachshund began bleeding from her mouth so we took her to the vet who initially diagnosed her as gums bleeding as her teeth were due for cleaning along with an abscess. She continued to bleed some from her mouth thru the night and on the following day she was brought in for teeth cleaning. On the day following her teeth cleaning, we again noticed blood at her mouth and now in her urine. She was drinking some water and she ate a little but then vomited some blood so once again we brought her in to the Vet and was advised that she likely had been poisoned or had an autoimmune disease and that we ahould bring her immediately to LSU Veterinary Hospital. Got there, stabilized her and diagnosed her with ITP and kept her in ICU overnight. Less than 12 hrs later, received a call that she died as her bleeding could not be controlled. This occurred over a 4 day period.

shirnat, is there a diagnosis yet for your dog's low platelets? Though no recent grooming, our dog is dealing with the same thing. High fever, VERY low platelets. He's had lots of tests, but the vets are unable to determine the cause so far. He's now on antibiotics + prednisone. We're glad he's doing better, but not knowing the cause of the problem is driving me crazy.

Seems "shirnat" joined the forum, posted about a serious issue, and disappeared back into the cloud. Really discouraging to see people post concerned and helpful responses, only to be blown off my people such as this.

I do hope the dog is getting proper care and is on the mend!
