Do you water, fertilize, and mulch Conifers like any other tree?

I'm sorry if that comes across as a dumb question, but I live among Christmas Tree farmers, in fact, as I've mentioned before, I live next door to one. And he has never once watered them, or mulched them or anything. He doesn't even water them when he plants them. He just plants them when they're bare root babies, and shovels the dirt back in, stomps the dirt down with his foot, and walks away.

And his trees grow like crazy...I don't get it. Do conifers just not need water and mulch etc? I guess he doesn't care because he sells the trees when they're young still, that he doesn't care about seeing to it that the trees live a long healthy life. In any event, should I still mulch and fertilize these babies when they're first planted?

Thanks!
