Help with my star jasmine please!

I am really hoping for some advice for my Star jasmine, which is kept in an unheated conservatory, in good light. It had a great summer last year, flowering well and putting out lots of 'runners' which I hoped would start to wind their way up a trellis. It overwintered in here, which is frost free (no less than 4C/40). I noticed quite a bit of scale in late winter, so treated initially with Provado, and more recently with several applications of horticultural oil. All the scale I can now find appear dead and just flake right off.

As you can see, the plant looks awful and on death's door. Lots of browning leaves, many of which fall off to the touch, and a complete wilted look. The compost is not dry so confident it isn't as simple as that. I assume this isn't normal for this plant at this time of year, prior to new growth? Any help much appreciated.

I do not think its cold leaves normally turn purple/red it looks almost like sunburn/drying out! or possible high fluctuations between day and night temps. You say it was in a conservatory how close to the window was it? that or a reaction to one of the sprays. i have attached a photo with heat damage

There are some cultivars (or even strains) of Trachelospermum jasminoides that exhibit very pink buds and outer sepals. I don't think, however, that I've ever seen a pink FLOWERED Confederate Jasmine. Have any of the flowers actually opened as yet?

Well my experience with this plant is much different from other posters. Here, now is the time of year when established SJ's drop some old leaves and can look like your pictures. I often wonder if it is a reaction to a spell of Santa Ana winds, which we had a few weeks ago or the nights cooling off after being fairly warm all summer. Check--is the soil really dry? A good soaking or two now with the hose would not hurt. Mine do this leaf drop thing every year if I forget to fertilize and skimp on the water. Next year, give them some slow release fertilizer right after bloom, (when they start pushing new growth) and they should not look so bad come this time next year. That is my experience with my multiple Star Jasmine plants of many years growth. Others of course may know different.

You have to keep in mind that a balony is really an artificial environment and potentially hostile environment for most plants. Balconies can be difficult because of all that concrete (tend to bake in the sun) and the also the fact that most can be quite windy. It sounds as though your jasmine got too dried out. The fact that you replanted it should help in keeping it moister (larger pots stay wetter longer). It should recuperate though. Mine looses ALL its leaves over the winter (I leave it in an unheated garage that get cold because I have no space for it inside and it gets too big by the time I have to protect it from frost.) If your terrace is very exposed and windy, you might consider constructing something to reduce the wind/provide some protection from direct sun, etc.. Depending on your living circumstance, you might have to check the rules and regulations before doing any projects with that balcony. Good luck!

Meg, I'd remove all frozen leaves..Place in a bright, not too warm spot. Withhold fertilizing. The plant is stressed and stressed plants shouldn't be fed. Check soil..if it's dry then give it a good watering w/tepid water. If wet, wait a while then recheck. Toni

I must say that, more and more I am wondering if the spray damaged it. I can't believe it's heat because of thrived last summer and can be baking in there, but hasn't got hotter than maybe 80F max in there so far this Spring. It does look very similar to your photo though.

Do not forget outside or even inside with windows and doors open on a hot summers day there can be a breeze or high humidity that stops the plant from being damaged! where as inside in winter it tends to be a very dry atmosphere. But my guess would be something you sprayed it with :( hope it recovers for you :)

Horticulture oil is intended mainly for dormant plants that have dropped their leaves. Just as the oil will cover and smother an insect it will do the same to the leaves preventing photosynthesis. I wish I knew how to remove the oil safely. These damaged leaves will drop, hopefully new leaves push and it will recover for you.
