Sweet Autumn Clematis is a sure pleaser IMO ... planted a couple last season and this year, climbed over an arbor and gzillion 1" white blooms in Sept covered the top like a beautiful bride! other SA lovers claim, wafts of lovely vanilla-like or jasmine-like scents will grace your surround! Earl May promised that mine will develop the lovely scent as vine matures with seasons! I just read that she's easy to clone too! Careful with V Creeper - my neighbor's crawled over his Crab Apple tree and I think will eventually choke it. I had to have my tree limbs trimmed as the creeper is trying to reach over mine too! I thought I read somewhere in another thread in this IA gardening (while researching on ideal vine for my need) to be careful with Porcelainberry vine, as it is invassive ... birds love the berries and spread them in our prairie ... a potential problem. the deer fence has 4"X4" openings, supposed to be sturdy but thin. I plan to use plastic twin horizontally to help reinforce it and "T" posts every 8'. I never pruned tomato plants but had a very good harvest last year when everyone around me had poor produce that came in to late and was froze out. I picked tomato from end of July to mid Sept before the frost hit. Others did not get good tomatoes until end of August. As far as I can see the only difference is that I spread ash from my outside wood boiler on the garden. A neighbor remodeled a boarding kennel and I got all the decent chain link panels and scrap pieces of 2"X4" and 4"X4", the scrap pieces are on average 4' square. Would it work to weld them together to make 4'X8' sections and make "A" frame trellises or will the openings be to small?

How long a fence is it? Do you think your neighbor would mind (or notice) if you put a vine on it? Doesn't hurt to ask. If it's a really sturdy fence, wisteria might be nice. Even though it goes dormant, it still has a nice woody presence and will hide most of the fence once it grows up a bit. Even grapes could be useful here. If you don't mind losing a little space and want something softer than coniferous evergreens, there are some really wonderful clumping bamboos that can stay green all winter in your zone (check out Fargesia spp.). If you plant them close to the fence, they'll swallow it up and render it invisible. The landscaping forum can be helpful if you decide to go with plants.
